What's up with Gerber?
on: October 22, 2024, 07:13:48 PM
SMKW is running a massive Gerber clear out (MP800s were 85% off before they went out of stock!), BladeHQ is showing the Mini Paraframe discontinued, other realtors are doing similar big deals. Are we in the middle of a major wave of discontinuations? Is Gerber reconfiguring their business? Just a bunch of overstock floating around?

We'll see. Maybe they'll switch completely to military orders?

I don't know; I saw their Dime for almost $30 on Amazon the other day ::)

Might be just clearance sale for new products.

I guess I'm surprised by some of the stuff that's apparently being replaced. The Mini-Paraframe is pushing 2 decades, and it's a pretty popular "non-knife person knife." They leaned pretty hard into the Dual Force as well, though I'm not sure it sold well.

Happy to pick up a couple nice pieces for cheap either way.

Me too. The Dual Force was a hard pass at the $100 MSRP (especially for a Chinese-made tool), but at $50, it would've been a no-brainer.

I don't think I ever realized the DF was made in China. Seems like an odd choice for what was their headline tool that year. Even weirder since the Center Drive (which seemed like it was supposed to be a in a "line" with it) is MiUSA.

Just read that Fiskars is doing some changes to corporate and dividing some of it brands to two diffrent company. Gerber is staying under Fiskars but diving companies also means it looking some savings.

Looks like it; the MP 600 Pro Scout is no longer catalogued in Gerber's web page, leaving the Bladeless and the MP800 as the only ones with blade exchangers.

Snap-On still lists their (kinda overpriced) exclusive model, the SMT-97R---which equates to basically a mildly updated Pro Scout with the Sight Tools sheepsfoot blade--plus a red frame and BO  tools. Looks like I'm going  to have to  hurry up and get a Pro Scout.

Thanks for reminding me that one too, cody! :hatsoff:
It also have a "checkered" pattern for the pliers tip (versus the regular, grooved ones on the MP series) to (maybe) reduce marring, and  the revised lock tabs from the discontinued sight tool which, I think, makes them less prone to breakage when the tool falls to the ground. And yes, I also find it overpriced ( but wizh I could find a cheap, used one; looks so nice!).

Snap-On runs a heck of a racket. They sell a Kershaw Leek with their logo. That logo, an "SO" suffix in the item number, and maybe special packaging come at a $35 premium over a standard Leek.

[/rant]

Though they're admittedly rather steeply priced and come with a hokey sheath, I'm still slightly tempted to get one of their Gerber's next time the truck comes by my garage.

Oh yes, my son has both!  He used both and they're good quality, but the Snap On premium puts them out of my range

The Snap-On guy showed up today. He didn't have any of the Gerber's with him; he has to order them a certain way. But he assured me I could have one in about a week.

Dunc, is that one made in the USA?

Yes they are , although they now state they are assembled in the U.S with some global parts. I know the plier heads are now manufactured in Taiwan

My son's Snap On MP is a first class product.  He uses it in rotation with another MP 600 and loves his.
