New competition for the Leatherman Signal
on: February 13, 2025, 05:03:36 AM
Came across this while looking online tonight.  My apologies if this is something everyone knew about.

Actually, thanks Barry. I missed Antii's thread, so this is the first time I have seen the Stakeout Spark.

I did too Adam.  I actually found out about it on a news feed on my phone.  That hook looks like it will definitely handle some weight.

This seems really interesting. Finally some competition for the more outdoor type of tools. This is definitely one I can see myself invest in.

The price is definitely a winner compared to the Signal.

Exactly. The price has kept me from buying the Signal to be honest.

I think the selection of tools on the Gerber is spot on for a tool intended for the outdoor and wilderness camping crowd. I like the way it obviously targets a specific audience, and doesn't fall into the trap of trying to be everything for everyone, and the end up risking being nothing for no one. I think they did well on the design. Can't wait to hear how the quality and usability holds up when people get it in their hands.

I'd love to see Gerber move back into their "no frills/rugged/budget" niche compared to Leatherman. They were (I felt) doing well there up until like two years ago (when the MP600 shot up in price and the MP400 disappeared).

:iagree:  I know the majority of people I come across, especially hiking, have a Gerber with them if they have anything besides a Vic Classic.  When it comes to the trades, however, it's usually a Leatherman.

A head-to-head comparison between those three at a camp-out in the woods would be great.

When I play with the thought that a MT is the only blade I bring to the woods, camping for a couple of days, what tasks would I like it to be able to assist me with?

What comes to my mind is:

- Preparing wood for fire (sawing and carving)

- Making other tools out of wood (eating utensils, tent pegs, walking stick)

- Setting up camp (tightening rope work, cutting string, lifting bundled branches)

- Food preparation and cooking (cutting ingredients, beer and can opening, lifting a hot Billycan or kettle out of the fire)

- Fishing purposes (removing hook, cutting line, scaling)

- For fire making (carving feather sticks, as a fat wood scraper, a ferrorod striker and an ember poker)

- Taking down camp (loosening rope as a marlin spike, cutting down stuff)

- Doing small fixes of gear (cutting Gorilla tape, making a hole, tightening a screw on the storm kitchen, squeezing a broken zipper on the hammock or backpack together)

- First aid (cutting bandaid mostly, at which Vic scissors rock)

- Recreation (whittling)

Another important thing for me is ease of carry and easy access. The method should be secure, so I don't drop and loose it. Hi-vis is preferable, but can be added in a lanyard, since I tend to mindlessly put it on the ground when working. When I reach for it again in the forest bed, it has seemingly packed up and left without me. I have on more than one occasion used a considerable amount of time on all fours searching for a folder, because the earthy colors I prefer, leaves it next to invisible there. It's strange, because I never do this with my fixed blade, which goes in and out of its sheet as second nature when I'm working. :dunno:

My Workchamp does pretty well on all of these tasks since I tend to not need strong pliers in the woods. The small one on the Workchamp lifts hot kettles just fine, and the hook on my Huntsman does it beautifully also. A good sturdy stick does the job as well to be honest. :D And since I use the scissors very often, one of the SAK's is often what I reach for when heading out.

I always find new, good uses for my MT when out and about, and I'm sure I must have forgotten something? But I believe that the above covers most of my recurring needs.

Does anyone have other needs? Perhaps some hunters here surely might have?

Reflecting on this, the Signal comes to mind as the one MT, that ticks most of the boxes, right? Perhaps I should start saving. Seems many here are pleased with theirs?

I'm with you on what you said Dane.  I think the Work Champ is a great camp/hiking multitool.  It covers everything I need on my journeys, and the small pliers work for lifting a hot kettle, turning off a hot camp stove, or adjusting the locking clamps on a set of trekking poles.  I've also found the Swiss Champ great for the job.  I like the size of the Work Champ for handling it with cold hands and gloves.  I've yet to do anything more than a day hike with the Signal, but I like the toolset.  With the exception of the pliers, it's pretty similar to a Vic Hiker and Trekker.  I have to give Gerber credit for that hook.  I think that could come in handy.  The one thing missing on the pliers tools that I can see is a cork screw to deal with knots, but that's an easy fix.  Just throw a Spartan in your pack!
