Sharpening Systems: User Friendly / 16 Degree Angle
on: March 26, 2025, 01:40:34 PM
I have a Leatherman Wave+ and I’m having a hard time getting the straight blade back to scary sharp. I’m currently using oil stones with an angle finding gage to try and maintain the 16 degree factory angle.

I’m looking for recommendations on more user friendly systems that also don’t take forever to put a sharp edge on the straight blade.

I borrowed a Work Sharp Precision Adjust Elite Knife Sharpener from someone and used it to sharpen the straight edge blade on my Leatherman Wave. The problem I noticed when sharpening a smaller knife like the one on my Leatherman is that the sharpening stone on this system when set to 16 degrees contacts the clamping fixture.

The precision adjust system allows me to sharpen to the exact angle I want and is very user friendly, but because the knife is small, i can’t use the system without the stone contacting the clamp. I found that I can clear the clamp, when I have a small section of the blade clamped at the widest points, but the problem with this is that there is minimal purchase between the clamp and blade. I'm sure this isn't ideal and impacts the overall accuracy of the system. See photo.

Again, just looking for recommendations. Something like this work sharp guided system would be perfect and could be used on things like kitchen knives, but the challenge with smaller pocket knives like my leatherman take it out consideration.

We have a few reviews of sharpening systems. One might have a 16 degree angle.

Worksharp elite is great and comes with an angle finder. Also would use a black marker on edge to verify the angle. I'd be careful with angles under 17.5 degrees. Good way to find out how chippy a blade really is.

Yes the elite is great. The only issue I have is with the sharpening stone contacting the clamp when sharpening a smaller knife like the one on my leatherman.

The factory edge on the leatherman wave+ is 16 degrees. Would you suggest reshaping the edge to something like 20 degrees? If yes, then this opens up more options for me interms of sharpening systems. Was also looking at something like the Work Sharp MK2 Professional Electric Knife and Tool Sharpener. Wasnt considering initially because the angle on this tool is 20 degrees.

I use a Spiderco Sharpmaker on all my blades. Not quite the factory angle, I use 40 degrees, or 20 each side. It get the blades scary sharp for any Leatherman or Victorinox and I finish off with a strop.

Sorry for late reply, secondary bevel or micro-bevel at a realistic angle is a great idea.  :tu:

I’ve heard this recommended before. Is this the system you are referring to? See link below. $60 on amazon.

Looks like a very close knock off :o It should perform like the Spyderco one as long as the sharpening stone material is comparable  :salute:

As Poncho said, this is a copy, not the real version. But it is what the Spyderco one looks like. I would be more concerned with the stone materials and what they may do to your blades.

The Spyderco system is very good and well worth the money. Add the super fine honing stones and a strop and you have a very complete system for multi's and kitchen knives.

Yip, that is the one I have. I also added two of these stones for the final stage before stropping.

They have went up quite a bit since I bought mine :o :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh

If you buy the knock off and the stones aren't great you could possibly buy the Spyderco ones and use them in it  but I haven't checked prices on them in a long while either and they may be much more expensive as well :dunno:

I also did buy the older version of the Sharpmaker on ebay for a much cheaper price but that was also several years ago :D

If buying used, how would you confirm if it is authentic or fake?

I ordered the spyderco sharpmaker. It should arrive. today.

Question. From what've read, the spyderco sharpmaker excels at keeping sharp knives sharp. It will bring back an edge fairly quickly if you haven't let it degrade to needing a real sharpening. If a knife is dull, a more aggressive medium is needed first, before finishing up with the spyderco sharpmaker. Is this correct? If yes, I have an electric knife sharperner, could I use that as the more aggressive option to get the sharpening process started and getting the profile / angle defined before finishing with the spyderco sharpmaker?
