Maxpedition Havyk-1 Backpack
on: March 29, 2025, 12:52:14 AM
I recently picked up a Maxpedition Havyk-1 backpack. I was just wondering if anyone else picked one up? I got the dark blue one. It doesn’t seem to be a common color. Mine changes color in different lighting conditions. It turns a blueish green in direct sunlight and is noticeably darker in indirect light. I added snake knot lanyard pulls on all the zipper pulls. I also added a cobra weave paracord wrap to the handle on the top of the pack.

Front compartment open 75%. This ensures all of your admin type items don’t spill out. There are two additional pockets with with mess so you can see the contents. Also the interior color is a nice contrasting gray.

The main compartment fully opens making loading a breeze. If you had storage cubes for clothing it would make a great travel pack. There is a sleeve in the back. It will fit a laptop but you will need a laptop sleeve. The front panel is loop so Velcro pouches or accessories could be attached.

Very cool.  I really like the color of that one.  It is an interesting cross between a military style MOLLE type bag and a regular Jantsport type bag, similar to the Prepared Citizen bag Megan got a few years ago at SHOT.

Only yours is a bit more military oriented with the MOLLE stuff, but without looking overly military-ish.  It looks like a really handy bag and would fit nicely between my relatively small Sitka and my much larger Entity 27.

I like the idea of having the attachment points without looking too mall ninja-ish!

Thanks Grant, I think that is the main reason I picked this one up is that it did remind me of my Jansport I had back in college during the early 90s. As for build quality, it is good with 500D codura. I will say I like the fabric of this one much more than on the Entity pack I had. I do like that it does bring in some of the parts that the Entity line got right with those of the legacy line. I guess kind of a hybrid pack.

Thanks RP! I was having a hard time getting the color to show what it was truly like. This was the closet I could get with my phone camera.

Well if it holds up as well as most of the Maxpedition bags I have had then you are going to have it for a long, long time.

I have had several that I bought used, used heavily for a few years and then re-sold and had the buyer insist that they wanted a used bag and they thought I had sent them a new one.  I don't know what they do to these bags that make them indestructible, but they have impressed me a lot over the years.

That said, the plastic windows on the ID holders yellow and crack after the first few years, but that happens to all the plastic ID holders, so it's not on them.  It is just a frustration.

The only other issue I generally find with Maxpedition products is the zipper pulls- there is nothing wrong with the paracord that they come with but I usually upgrade to a nicer zipper pull.  Years ago I bought a bunch in black, coyote and green on eBay and I just pull a few from the pile as I need them.

My Maxpedition stuff has held up beautifully. I purchased my pouches in November of 2015, and they still look like new. I am now using my tan Micro as my wallet, after my cheap trifold wallet got too worn to carry. The only thing is, I tend to overload these, so the threads start to come loose. Not just overload, I had long pens and stuff that barely fit into it, and it was stretching the fabric and putting too much pressure on the seams. Completely my fault for overdoing it. I've lightened the load and fixed the threads and it still looks like I bought it a week ago.
For zipper pulls, I change the knots to Chinese Friendship knots. I like having the loops nice and round. But the default paracord has held up so no complaints there.
I wish the Micro had molle on the back. Or at least a belt loop or something.

I am right there with you Grant and RP, in that one of the first things I do on any pouch or pack regardless of manufacture is to upgrade to 550 parachord on the zipper pulls. I hate fumbling to find the pulls. If the pack just came with a chord pull, I remove the original chord and do a new pull with five or six snake knots and a chord end. If it has a metal pull I add a chord pull by looping through the metal pull and adding three snake knots and a chord end. I think this adds a clean look as well as making access to the pouch or pack a snap.

The zipper pulls on the Entity series are really good.

They are a bit bulky and I can see why they ,ay not be right for all the different bag styles but I really like them.  They are also really easy to operate with gloves on, which is an important consideration here in Canada.

I also really like these glow in the dark ones that I have put on my Sitka:

Unfortunately I only have so many and I can't seem to find more.  That's probably for the best as they actually turned out to be a bit more fragile than I would have liked.

These are the ones I usually stick to now:

I have them in black and red, OD green and coyote brown.  I may have some all black ones, I am not sure, but they really look like they belong on Maxpedition bags.
