Certainly you have something around without screwdrivers and bottle openers?   :pok:

All those Opinels... I'll do my best to add to this thread. Things are really sticky for me right now, though.

Oh good.  I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that has a problem.  After seeing powernoodle's post, I don't think I have a problem after all.   :D

Well, this war has officially drawn first blood.
I picked up a couple Opinels #6's when the Boss Lady and I were on vacation in WNC, last month.
Didn't have one on me today but had my Highlander Jack in my pocket. Sliced the crap out of my finger staging the picture.  Now I'm trying to type this with only my left thumb.

Ouch!

I hope it didn't get you too badly!   :ahhh

What do you think of those Opinel #6's?  Personally I don't think there's a better value in the knife world than an Opinel!  Mora is a very close second.... but I feel Opinel is better because as a folder it is more convenient to always have with you!

Sliced into the side and end of my index finger.
Couldn't get the blood to stop even with direct pressure for over an hour. The towel that I had was saturated.  When the Boss Lady came home sh nearly fainted.   Got it cleaned up and bathed in peroxide then added 2 bandages.   Nó more leaks.  She still says I should have gone and gotten some stitches.
I'll take the bandages off   tomorrow.  To check out oít.

I'm still hanging in there though.

I do like an Opinel knife.  Simplicity at it's best.

Im partial to the no. 6 , carbon  that I genuinely use to carve with .  Modify the blade into a wharlitffe to carve pits

I'm going to go ahead and agree with the boss lady on maybe getting some stitches.  It's okay, you don't have to tell her that she's right if you don't want to, but you still really should get that checked and stitches if necessary.

Just make sure you learn from my mistake.

I slipped with a PST II and sliced open my middle finger, from the nail, around the end and halfway down to the first knuckle joint.  It was not a pleasant experience.

As the doctor was stitching me up I asked him if I'd still be able to drive without that finger.

He paused, thought for a moment why my middle finger would affect my driving ability then started laughing.

Whole holding forceps.

Which were holding a needle.

Which was attached to some thread.

That was currently attached to a nasty gash in the end of my finger.

Wait till after they are done to make stupid comments.  You can thank me for that advice later on!

Duly noted...though I didn't think that use of the middle finger would be so important in Canada. :D And if the cut was as bad as PitCarver made it out to be, I would have needed Boss Lady's advice, too.

I couldn't agree more on the superb value that is the Opinel. Unless you're dead-set on carbon steel, you can get some spiffy handles for very little more. (The more premium handles paired with carbon steel blades would be outstanding...is anyone from Opinel reading this?) Being able to lock the blade in the closed position is a nice feature. And that blade can handle at least 99% of my knife needs. I consider them to be the perfect carry knife.

Been as far north as Maine in our travels.
Finger is healing up nicely after I got the blood stopped.  I'm on blood thinners due to AFib so keeping pressure on it was important.  I've cut myself pretty good over the years and actually thought that sutures might be needed but once I got it bandaged up I felt better about it.
I've seen plenty of blood in my old job, working in a prison.  I just haven't seen that much of my blood that wasn't being pumped into a bag.

Prison work must have been fun.  I worked in the jails for a number of years and I honestly kind of miss it.

It's a very different lifestyle, isn't it?   :D

I'm glad you are managing to keep the pretty red stuff inside.  If you aren't going to get stitches then may I recommend some steri strips and/or Crazy Glue to help keep it shut?  Both are excellent alternatives, although my personal preference is the steri strips, mostly because I'm a bit weird about getting cyanoacrylate into an open wound.

It's been 25 years since I had to retire. Had almost 18 years in at the time.  Still kinda miss it also.

One of the things that I hated was not being able to carry a knife.   Sensible rule nonetheless.  I did carry a Leatherman Micra, in my change pouch for quite a while though.

Yeah, definitely a sensible rule.  As someone who has been actually stabbed, I can strongly recommend that it's an experience you should try to avoid!   :ahhh

I imagine it would just be that much worse if it was your own knife that someone used to do it.

I will say that I miss getting cheap laptops and stuff though.  It's amazing, when my regulars were out on the street they'd swing by with some cool stuff that weirdly fell off the back of a truck!

Ah, the ol' "fell off the truck" thing. I knew a guy who was a "hustler" and often tried to fence sell things that were claimed to have met that fate.

My penultimate job in California took me into the state's prison system. And I despised having to leave my nicotine in my vehicle, and leave things bladed at the shop. For those two reasons alone, that is the first and last job I will have that takes me into a correctional facility.
