They joy of collecting is sometimes dulled a little by finding nice things - just to discover they are damaged. In a way that points to a former user being a total...  I know these are tools and that they are ment to be used. But there is a difference between use - and abuse...

This circa 1984-5-6-ish (90 degree lock cap lifter, small v stamp, brass liners) Pioneer lookes great from the outside. The red scales looking like they have not been banged up or used enough to rub off the anodising.

Looking good.

Looking good..

Looking good...

Looking.... abused!

I am going to get another blade for it. OR use the scales for swapping out the silver ones on  a Pioneer X - getting an old cross X. We will see.

Man, that hurts just to look at! Try sending it to Victorinox. They usually fix (awlmost) anything.

I don't think of myself as a cruel person. I'm kind to animals and my dog is a spoiled princess. BUT...

I think this deserves a public flogging. A severe public flogging.  :pok:
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

Thank you all for agreeing with me. I was afraid of being thought a whiner...

For reference - of the full extent of the damage:

I can appreciate a tool that has been used a lot and is worn. It has its charm - especially - for instance if the scales are worn down by handling them (not - as in used as a hammer) and/but the knife is in good order. In good order as if it has been used for its intended purpose. And if sharpened - it has been done with care.

But in this case when it is obvious the tool has not been used a lot but has been used in the wrong way and then re-grinded to h-ll - it is a sad thing.

The OLD CROSS scales are gorgeous!  Thank you for sharing😎🌹

The blade,   Ignorance is awl I can say, that can result with a blade damaged as that. Causes my toes to curl!!!

Great find, and you I am sure will do it right!👍

If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

Oh, I have plenty of work knifes. I use them for cutting and I have never broken off pieces from the edge using them as a knife. I use other tools for prying, bending or digging ;-)

you can grind the edge flat and reprofile the edge to be smooth very easily. That blade is far from being ruined for use

The juxtaposition of the blades makes it look even worse. If you can save that blade though I would.

I know (and I know how to do it). If this was my only knife and I needed it as such I would of course do that. It is not. This one being in such good condition apart from the blade I feel it needs a better solution (for it - and me). As I wrote earlier it will get a new/good blade (of the same vintage) or I will use the scales and the good tools for a modern X. Both alternatives are better, I believe, than a yet another grinding away of material. I would just not have any warm feelings for the knife if doing that - looking at the sad remains of the blade -  and then it would be left at home and never used.

My JPST is similarly afflicted, so I can empathize with you. I agree with ThisAlarm7...if you can save the existing blade, that's the way to go.

Bad weather here today, low temperatures and wet. Me and my wife are having colds - sneezing and coughing in stereo. Nothing to do but nothing. Thought I would do what some of you suggested - sorting out the blade to as good as it can be under the circumstances.

It was bad. I got is as good as possible and to an untrained eye it might look OK. But for me the shape and size is a downer. As I wrote earlier - if this was my only knife it would be an OK user. Now it is just a semi-collectible old cross with a bad blade.

I will stick to my original plan and make something else of it.

And with a 91mm as reference too:

Now we are going to binge-watch the Lord of the rings triology (many years since we saw it). Perfect for a couple-cold on a saturday night.

edit and PS - the tip of the blade had been thinned out by the one who did the damage. This gave that I could not get the stringent tip that I would like - without taking away even more material from the blade. This was a compromise I had to make.

Nice job!

Looks very nice, used but clean and neat.

Remember the mystic of an OLD CROSS is not the implements, it is the scales!  And, those look very good!🌹

Enjoy the movie(s, and time with the wifey.  Get better, hot tea, honey and tissues!

Looks nice!

Based on some of the recent repairs I’ve seen here and on Reddit, it seems Vic keeps a stock of old blades. If you ever decided to send it in, I bet they’d fix it up good as new.

What a fantastic restoration job on that blade J2000E

I would be leaving exactly as is now

I am a big fan of leaving exactly the original parts wherever possible
eg maybe draw the line at a snapped off blade NN - Reprofiled blade - YY

Thank you all (awl..? - I have seen this here...) for your nice comments! I know what I would want for this old cross - and my instinct still says "fix it good" - but I am not in a hurry and thanks to your comments I I will let it rest for a good while to see if I warm up towards it. Drastic measures should not be made without proper considerations. Thanks!
