I may need to join Photographers Anonymous!
on: June 19, 2025, 11:04:16 PM
I think I have a problem. I just can't seem to pass up a great camera deal, especially if it is local.

I have a full Pentax set of cameras and lenses. My late father loved Pentax, and I guess I inherited that from him. Currently, I have a Pentax K10D, a k-01, a K-r, and a K-3 camera along with a nice set of lenses for them.

On the Canon side, I have quite a few DSLRs and a single mirrorless.   I currently have an EOS 1D Mark IIn, EOS 50D, EOS 5D Mark II, Rebel XSi converted to IR, and of course the awesome little R100 that I bought at the local pawn shop for 200 Canadian with kit lens. Man I love the R100. The advances over my other gear is astounding, especially when it comes to autofocus.

I must admit, the R100 has blown my socks off, and I am wondering if I should get an R10 or R7 down the road. Mind you,  I am super impressed with the AF on the R100 and probably don't see a need to upgrade. Just my curiosity about how much better the higher cameras are compared to the R100.

Anyways, I just came back from the pawn shop with another camera. This time it is a Canon 80D with 18 - 135mm f 3.5-5.6 IS USM lens. Brand spanking new in box with only 14 shots taken. I paid $499 Canadian for it. I googled the lens in store and it sells new for $565 Canadian. A used 80D body sells for $679.99 at Henry's. I couldn't pass up that deal.

I have quite a few film cameras as well, including a Canon A2E, an Elan 7, and an  Elan 7NE to name a few.

Yes I have a problem. Can I call myself a collector and not a hoarder?

Here are some photos of the newest addition, a Canon 80D.

Came with box, all the instructions, body and lens cap, and an extra battery.

The weird part about this, the pawn shop had 2 other Canon cameras. They wanted the same price ($499) for a Rebel XS simply because it came with a Roots camera bag. They also wanted 300 for a Rebel T7. I told them they had the XS priced high. The 80D is a very nice semi-pro camera with an articulating screen. The last time I had one of those was on my old Canon G5 that broke many years ago. I still can't believe a local guy bought this camera and only took 14 shots with it. I know it was a local person as the only thing on the memory card was a 4 second video showing the only camera store in town.

I already bought a battery grip for the camera off of Amazon.

I think you can call yourself whatever you want. Some might disagree but they don't know you as well as you do?

As for me I don't think some cameras qualify as hoarding. I don't even think the difference is in the numbers as there can be big collections. The difference might be whether you keep track and store things properly rather than having them just taking up random spaces? If you find cameras stacked in your shower or food cabinet then you've probably crossed some hoarding red line.

My definition of hoarding might be on the liberal side though :)

Latest update...just bought another camera,

I have been so impressed with the plucky little mirrorless Canon R100 that I have been thinking how much better something a little better might be. After reading all the online reviews on how one should bypass the R100 because it is older technology, etc. Well, that curiosity thing reared its head and I bought a Canon R10 on its last day of sale from Henry's, a Canadian photography store chain.

I will post photos once I get it in, I am looking forward to see how much better it will be over the fantastic R100. The R10 has a newer sensor with better ISO range, faster frames per second in both mechanical and electronic shutter speed, better tracking, etc. Should be interesting...so much so that I decided against going one step higher with the R7 as it had features I do not need or would use,

I find such items hard to avoid these days. Cell phones in particular comes to mind, the car has some weird menus which I try not to provoke in case there be dragons, our dish washer wouldn't even start up without connection to some app, same with a fridge, and for some reason power tools now need apps? And the last electric heater we bought insisted on beeping when it reached set temperature, when temperatures changed, when it felt like or it was full moon - impossible to sleep next to anything like that, so it was doomed. I just wanted heat...   :dunno:

To be fair I do like cameras with all options, but there more exotic ones can be hidden away from daily use functions.

I've fallen so behind on the Canon models it seems that even the old ones are new to me!  :ahhh

Me neither  :D The last Nikon I got was in the 80s. Mostly because they were so hesitant about going full frame digital that they weren't an option when I bought my last DSLRs. Which is close to 20 years ago now. :)

If I were to get anything like a normal camera today I would like hard at Fujicam I think. Then again, I have a fair bit invested in Canon lenses. (Which worked out fine with cinema style cameras as you can change the entire lens fitting to Canon, Nikon, 4/3", Sony, Leica and so on).

My current project is trying to convince some camera to play nice with my microscope. The camera that came with it was no good, but then again I haven't found the right adapter or hit the right distance for any other camera either. Any picture taken looks like a faded washed out version of what I can see with my eyes.

That sounds rather challenging. My first Nikon was a Nikon 990 back in 2001. My only other Nikon is a Coolpix L32 purchased back in 2015 because I wanted something to take photos while on the motorcycle that took AA batteries. It was the only camera that was the right size and used the right power source for my needs. I still have that camera.

I have 2 microscopes upstairs. Now you got me thinking maybe I should also bash my head to incorporate them into my photography? That will have to wait, still waiting on the Canon R10 t0 grace my door, whenever that will happen, Shipping from Toronto and currently in Mississauga.

Lots of interesting stuff you never see without a microscope. Some motives are even photogenic.

A key issue seems to be that most microscopes are optimized to deliver an eye pupil sized image. Which is tiny compared to a SLR photosensor. So either I'd need some more optics to traverse that gap somehow, or I need a small sensor size camera that is actually good. Both seem viable, but not sure I willing to put much money into that.

Understood. I used to use a microscope to Pentax M42 adaptor back in my film days.
