Vic website - Nice true story - Fake photograph!!
on: September 12, 2025, 01:24:38 AM
So this popped up when I went to the Vic website today
https://www.victorinox.com/en/Air-Zermatt/cms/air-zermatt/

It's a really great story, and as we probably all know, the Resue Tool was developed by Victorinox in conjunction with rescue services, although I never knew one of those might have been Air Zermatt. And of course the Rescue Tool is a fabulous model.

And what a great photo:  :salute:
A skier in trouble, an emergency services hero, of course with his Rescue Tool, a helicopter in the sky, and the amazing Matterhorn, which towers above Zermatt, in the background.

So what's the problem?   ???    :think:
  • Firstly I am not sure why this skier got into trouble on a relatively flat piece of ground!
  • Secondly the rescuer appears to be cutting the belay loop on his harness - Why would he do that? It's not restricting any movement or access and normally in a recue situation you would not remove the harness - Maybe when the injured person gets to hospital or possibly in the copter. And the belay loop is not doing anything in this situation anyway!
  • And thirdly looking at the skier's boots and skis and sticks, he is a downhill skier. Downhill skiers don't even wear climbing harnesses - If he was a ski mountaineer he would be,  along with different gear!!
  • And finally, yes, as mentioned above what a perfect location for an accident: with the Matterhorn in the background, a beautiful sunny day, and a very convenient photographer at hand to capture the moment the rescuer cut the harness! So of course, the photo is totally staged ;)
Oh well there you go.
And by the way, with this post I am applying for the MTo, sad and lonely old git/killjoy badge   :pok:    :twak:    :cheers:    :rofl:

And I gotta say - I love the piccie and the story   :D    :o

EDIT PS: I just looked at the video - Had not done so earlier - Looks like they really flew the copter and did  lift a guy off the snow etc etc - But still all staged!

Vic used to have a pretty extensive collection of true SAK stories on their website, but I haven’t been able to find it since a few website redesigns ago.

Not to mention that, judging by the snow, the skier just slided until that spot, stoped and then let himself fall down from a stationary standing position. With a little jump up, 'cause the skis are not along the tracks in the snow.

When you Google "Grumpy Ol' Git" you may just see a picture of me.

So, I googled it.  There were a lot of photos which might or might not be PitCarver.  Then I saw one interesting image.  A diamond shaped yellow sign that read Grumpy Old Git on Board.   :think:

@AztecC

That is brilliant -
I was admiring the first few sentences - as it is a very accurate description of an old git - which I appreciated as I am (a) British (old git) - even though I live in Oz. But the last sentence had me laughing out loud - literally - then giggling for several minutes.

@PFR - Good spot - Yes that too !!   :pok:    :o

A painted picture, of course. No photographs exist from that era...

2 questions

1 - is there an age requirement or is it more of a feeling?

2 - where can I get that hat?

I loved that section, too.
Probably one of the things that "hooked" me into SAKs, besides themselves.
