Printed scales question

This is for anyone that owns a SAK with camo scales…how well do they hold up? I know that they are printed on and eventually will get scratched and scuffed, but did you notice it happening quickly after carrying it or did it take a while? Is there a protective coating I could use to make them last longer?

I can't say I use it much (58mm Classic in camo) but I bought one used years ago and it still seems pristine. [No pocket carry though so no keys to bash against and get scratched.]

My experience has been that the print doesn't hold up well. (If I knew where Tatty Rally was, I'd include a photo of it for proof.) This is likely exacerbated by pocket or keychain carry. I've also seen photos of many a Wenger with its printed cross worn completely away. What I'm unsure of is how long it takes for the print to wear off. The only thing I can think of that might protect the print is a clear coat of paint. If you go that route, test the paint on a junker set of scales first to make sure it plays nice with Cellidor.

Find him! Participate in a Challenge thread, carry knife/tool with a blade 4" or longer, and post a photo every day for 30 consecutive days. Participate in a Challenge thread, carry at least one green edc item, and post a photo every day for 30 consecutive days. Participate in a Challenge thread, carry a Victorinox Hiker, and post a photo every day for 30 consecutive days. Must start a thread with a photo of at least five (5) of your watches Build your own version of an MRE using off-the-shelf components, post a photo of the completed MRE and store at room temperature for 6 days or more. Consume the MRE after the storage period and post pictures and descriptions of the contents. Take part in the christmas pool or a rak type giveaway. Those wanting to say thank you for a rak may also nominate for the santa. Participate in a Challenge and post a photo of a Utility Knife for thirty (30) consecutive days. Participate  in a Challenge thread and post a photo of a LM Pocket Survival Tool for thirty (30) consecutive days. Start a new thread and post a photo of the multitool for thirty (30) consecutive days. Start a new thread and post a photo of the pen for thirty (30) consecutive days. Start a new thread with photos of your zip ties in use

Here are a couple of photos of Tatty Rally, to show how print on scales can wear. These scales being white doesn't help matters much. It's been my experience that white scales get very dingy and unappealing with even moderate use.
