Customizing a Pioneer X
on: November 03, 2025, 06:00:54 PM
My friend Chris Casavelha made the Alox discovery of the century:
A little nail polish and I have another colour Pionoeer X. Red, Gold, Black, you name it!
We're still working on the Old Cross...

Nice.  If it was me, I would leave the cross red.  Best wishes.  G

That's how I got my black MiniChamp.

I noticed the nail polish is a gel type. Mrs. FX became briefly enamored with those, and there was something odd about them. I think they needed an application of heat to set properly. Regular nail polish is pretty much just a lacquer paint. I'm curious as to how the gel would hold up over time.

My daughter uses gel nail polish and puts her nails under a UV light to set the polish.

As Sir PsyJohn said, the gel type needs to be cured for a minute (I think) under UV light in order to properly set and last on Mrs. Y's nails, but I didn't bother curing it, as I really wanted the red finish to look like a gorgeous Old Cross with pocket wear. I even went as far as lightly sanding it to better simulate the worn-out anodizing.
As for the golden version, I used regular nail polish.
Now I'm thinking of changing it to another colour... Maybe the bright yellow lemon?

All of my Pioneers are colored Alox but now you have me wanting to get a silver one to try with nail polish.
I won't buy another one.

Yes, it was UV light. Thanks for setting me straight! Pending a long-term durability test, I may be tempted to try that little trick.

I found out last night that the black nail polish my wife used for Halloween is the gel type. Looks like I'm going to have black Alox Mini Champ soon.

Awesome! I'm still hopeful that a long-term durability test will be conducted.
