I found a new use for a SAK
on: November 07, 2025, 11:58:56 AM
I was at my local watch shop killing time yesterday, looking at some nice Seiko divers and some beautiful Eco Drives and the urge to take one home really set in.  I had the money handy but I really needed to do other things with it, like pay bills and other such boring endeavors, but they were calling my name.

I figured before I splurged I should look around the rest of the store and see if maybe there was a Victorinox watch that needed me more....

And that's when I spotted the Synergy models, right next to the watches.

I snagged a silver Synergy X, the most expensive one there and justified it as being MUCH cheaper than the watches I was looking at, and therefore buying the X was the budget option to a $500 watch.

Follow me for more financial tips.

Congratulations Grant, it is beneficial to treat yourself every so often😉

Or, that is what I tell myself on many an occasion🤪

Yet, I must say, most surprised by your selection, and look forward to your impressions.   Maybe MEGAN’s too!

I looked at those new releases and like the COMPANION ALOX models recently introduced, I just thought Victorinox has caved or more so compromised to test the retail market with these styles.

I too am a watch guy, but finding it difficult to buy a new watch since my daughter gifted me a iWatch 4 years ago. I credit that device with improving my physical being by keeping me moving…  as 2021 was a tough year, loosing my wife to heaven and diagnosis of cancer.    I am still here.

So I still look, and sometimes and sometimes I to tickle my itch.  Amazon and eBay make it to easy,   But, I know if there in person, a new watch would have left with me…
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

In the U.S., that would arguably be tax deductible as a business expense.   :woohoo:

Yeah, one of these days I'll register MTO as a business and all of you as dependents....  :ahhh

Don't rush me, it's only been 19 years!  I'll get around to it....

I bought it yesterday and todays I am flying so I haven't really had much of a chance to play with it, but I do have some initial thoughts.

I'm honestly looking forward to using it and seeing what it's all about.  I can see the box opener being more useful than the can opener, but I have had can openers on SAKs for so long I may struggle to get used to it.

Also, a locking ALOX model?  It's weird to get used to that too.

I'm also wondering how much pocket lint is going to get caught in the fancy cutouts.

And, I am wondering if it's the same ALOX as the other models- it doesn't look or feel the same.  I think the old ones were cast, and this seems more like it's just cut from a sheet of aluminum.

I'm good with the pocket clip- my custom Compact has one of those and so SAKs with pocket clips isn't such an odd concept.  :D

But a nail file instead of an awl or small blade?  I have a bit of an interesting experiment going on with that, but I'll do that in a thread all on it's own.  It should be an interesting showdown....  >:D

You should totally do this! You could deduct the costs of the MTo domain and tool aquisition as business expenses. Heck, even the stuff you buy to built up Grantanamo Bay! That's the MTo headquarters, right?

I picked up three…. Been carrying the X everyday!

Now, to tear it apart and rebuild to replace the package opener with a modded can opener.

While Walmart has about doubled the amount of Victorinox they sell, I no longer have the local knife store that was a Victorinox dealer (in fact, my first came from them). The jeweler selling Seiko around here doesn't sell knives. Basically, when I go there--it's to change the battery in my watch.

Me--I have three or four cheap Walmart Casios (not even a G-Shock in the bunch), a few Timex (including a 1950s English-made automatic), a Victorinox, and a Bertucci. All those put together probably cost less than one Seiko.  Been thinking about an old pocket watch--not something pricey that's for sure. A lot of American ones aren't expensive to the point of being collector's pieces.

I seem to have accidentally become a Casio collector. I have the CA-53 (modern version of Marty McFly's calculator watch) in several colors, a couple of basic ones, and an A100 (Ripley from Alien's watch) that I got for my wedding day. There's a basic G-Shock maybe coming in the mail... backordered from when OfficeMax had a good sale a month or so ago.

On the topic of SAKs, I'm going to a cutlery shop with my dad tomorrow, and we'll see if I can resist walking out with one.

Im pretty sure all alox scales have been stamped.
