When is the pretty Silvertech Huntsman due?  You were right when you said the Huntsman is just a Fieldmaster with no phillips driver and a corkscrew.  Seems like there should be a Tinker silver thingie, but maybe not.
Best wishes.  G

Arrived today!

In very good condition, smudge on the blade and raise lettering on backside of scales. Maybe a name, not advertising.

You know, when I first realised that my Silvertech Swisschamp didn't have a pen I was absolutely furious — like, legitimately way angrier than such a thing should make a person. But then I actually realised why it is that those Silvertech scales can't exactly be built with a pen slot. I'll show you what I mean with some photos of my emerald Compact side-by-side. However, it seems as though they made a compromise version in the 'ice blue' (not sure if official name) Cybertool M. I think it's because that checkered, lattice-like pattern under the scales is impossible to have with a pen slot, which would bisect them. I also just noticed my emerald Compact doesn't have the extra slot standard in the plus scales... So, overall, I think that they weren't able to put a pen slot in the Silvertech scale and keep that lattice-like pattern indicative of the ABS scales, but which is much easier to see on the Silvertech ones in particular. I really wish I were better at photography .

That's a good point.  I never thought of that.  I've only used the pen on my Minichamp once but I was ever so grateful that I had it on me as I had to sign a document in blue ink and no one around me had a blue ink pen.  So... I guess the pen has earned a slot on my SAK.

I don't think I understand what you're saying. Silvertech scales are just like any other scales but painted on the inside, right? Why shouldn't that be possible with plus scales? Honest question, I'm not trying to be smart :D

Edit, ah, the checkered pattern. I see. Let me think.

Also, your blue scales have the super secret slot for the Voyager type of small tweezers.
You should seriously visit vicfan.com. All the hoopy froods are doing it.

No, I think your question fundamentally makes sense; it's not as if they're incapable of making a lattice-patterned plus scale with the pen slot, I just think Victorinox decided that would be too expensive, and perhaps wouldn't look as nice. Since that pattern seems, to me, to be one of the main reasons people buy those scales, I think Victorinox just decided that it wasn't worth including the pen because it would disrupt the pattern somewhat (and again, probably be more expensive).

I can't see any checkering using a low powered glass.  It looks like your SC has a pinhole with the straight pin in it.  Pin, not pen.  Did it come with it or did you add it?
Mine came with a pin in the hole.  Our friend Loop Cutter's came with a pin hole but no pin.  I don't know about friend AztecCypher's.
You (tuisto) also made a comment about your SAK with camo scales not having a straight pin.  According to the Tool Evolution Chart for 91mm, the pin was added to all scales in 2009.  That was with a question mark in the chart, since there is always an overlap as the factory uses old stock parts up.  Any update is gradual in that sense.  SC got the pin added in 1991.  Best wishes.  G

Oh, that makes sense. I thought the pin hole was added to all models in '91. And yes, my Silvertech SC came with the straight pin.  When I say checkering/lattice-like pattern, I mean the plastic lines in the scale, both horizontal . As far as I can tell, all my ABS clear scales have that lattice pattern on the tweezers side, but the plus scales don't have that lattice pattern on the 'plus side', they're just 'open', if that makes sense. I don't know if I'm articulating this well.

I see you are referring to the internal ribs in the scale.  It was the term checkering that threw me.  I never had a set of ABS scales off.  I couldn't say definitively if they are painted on the back or are made out of colored material.  I will say that the Silvertech sort of looks like it is painted.  There is a grain to the silver that looks like it might be paint.  Couldn't say without ripping off a scale and trying to scratch the color off.  I'm not about to do that to my ABS scales since none of them are broken or something.  The ruby ones for example look like they are made out of red ABS plastic all the way through.  I did sand an advertising logo off a ruby SAK and the sandpaper had remains of the white logo plus red dust.  That would lead one to believe that the colored ABS scales (other than maybe Silvertech) are the same color all the way through.

@Tuisto - Really good pick up
Yes the checkered term threw me a bit too - But I see what you mean now

I get the supposed theory on the 'why' from a Vic standpoint - But I don't agree with it!
I had always assumed that the backing on the transparent 'tech' scales was some sort of paint/covering
If you had a pen slot that bit should still work - eg like for the pin slot on the ST scales.
But as you say the ribbed pattern would be disrupted.

For me functionality always trumps looks* - So if ST scales with a pen slot don't look quite so neat/pretty
So what - I get a pen to use!!
This is also a little surprising from a Vic perspective as they always try and cram as many tools into a SAK as they can!

*This theory unfortunately, from my wife's perspective, also applies to my choice of clothing

It may have been before that. I purchased my old Super Tinker new in 2008. It still wears its original scales, and has the pin hole.

Ribs! Ribs is a much better term for what I was talking about here, thank you! And regarding Huntsman's post I completely agree (both in choice of clothing and tools ) But yeah, it sort of immediately excluded the Silvertech SC from being carried; I was so excited for the possibility of seeing how they'd do those plus scales but alas, they didn't...

Both the sapphire and my silvertech came with the pin.  I can see why the ribs would be "in the way" of the pen but function before form in my opinion.

I am with mixed emotions sharing this news today🤫

But, early this morning, I mean early, in an attempt to still my mind of wandering thoughts and searching for replacement scale for a 91mm,  AMAZON throws onto my screen a suggestion AGAIN!

A SAPPHIRE SWISSCHAMP, $79!

Apparently back in stock…

So if you missed out and thought I am late to the party, guess what!   You are one time!

Tempting, very tempting…

Gary, I know you weren't directing this question at me, but I'm going to tell you my experience with ordering a sapphire SC off that site. I bought one about three years ago (new, of course) and when I received it I actually (like a complete moron) shelved it and didn't quite look at it beyond peeking in to check if there was indeed a Sapphire SC in there. A few months later I actually opened it up and took it out to use it and it was a used, damaged product. Almost every tool was used, the corkscrew was bent, and the saw was somehow bent such that it scraped the fish scaler badly. I was too late to request a refund and when I called the site to complain, they baulked and effectively said "there's no possibility that you received a used item," in effect calling me a liar. I should mention that I have ordered a few Vics from that site and this was the only time I had such an experience, but I wanted to throw in my $0.02.
