The SOG Fielder was the first "real" knife I had. My father got it for me when I was around 14, and was quite the step up from the dubious old flea market specials I had before. Carried and used the knife heavily for years until, in my infinite late teen wisdom, I attempted to use the tip to pop a large wood staple out and TING..... half an inch of blade lost to stupidity, lesson learned
So, the Fielder got relegated to a tool box given the sentimental value and the guilt of wrecking it when I should habe known better. Finding a replacement spurred the interest in the pocket gear hobby and eventually leading me here. But every time I saw it, I felt the need to do something about it.
Well, this week was the time I suppose. I found a newer Fielder for cheap and decided to swap the blade over. Mine being the older model, there were a few differences that made it a little more interesting.
Overall it seems like the quality dropped throughout this models run, the fit and finish of the newer knife was not as clean, switching away from the mirror polish, replacing a copper washer with two nylons, and using slightly less material in the blade.
One welcome change however, was going to a keyed pivot screw. On the old model, the pivot stud had a button head and no way to hold it while trying to loosen the screw, resulting in the need to drill out.
So, I spent too much time and money to get a 25 dollar knife back in action, but it feels good to do right by an old companion, especially one that helped kick off the love of the hobby.
