Budgies seems the likely answers to me.  Rub it with a cuttlefish every month and you'll be fine.    ::)

This is my latest aquisition, a Nepalese Kothimora Kukri.

A Kothimora Kukri is a special version which is often given as a present by Gurkha soldiers to respected officers when they retire from the force.
This one was owned by a former American officer with the Marines who received it from a Gurkha corporal after they served together in Iraq.

The kukri itself is in contrast to the usual versions completely polished and the blade is inlayed with 2 small pieces of gold.
The handle is made from waterbuffalo horn and brass fittings.
The wooden sheath is decorated with red velvet and partially covered with thin filigrain silver.
In the back of the sheath you'll find the traditional accessories of the kukri; the Karda & Chakmak, both of which also have handles made from waterbuffalo horn.

Although this one is considered to be more of a ceremonial kukri, it's completely battleready and has a differentially hardened blade which is quite sharp.

Specifications:

Steel: polished high quality carbon steel, most likely made from a Mercedes truck spring.
Blade length: 24,5 cm
Blade thickness: 10,5 mm maximum
Handle material: Polished waterbuffalo horn & brass
Overall length: 37,0 cm
Weight with sheath: 626,0 gram
Weight without sheath: 443,0 gram
Sheath: Wood covered in red velvet and filigrain silver

I've had this knife for a few years now and never actually done anything to maintain the handles.  Mind you, I also haven't carried it any, so they don't exactly have much in the way of wear and tear on them either, but I believe that this stuff chips fairly easily.

I searched for "water buffalo horn maintenance" on Google and nothing came up, so it's possible it's actually a rugged material.  If there are any taxidermists in your area, try giving them a call and see if that helps.

Mind you, there's not many kuk's I don't like :)

Make sure you don't heat it up when you're shaping it.   It will tend to curl up.    The thinner you go, the more careful you need to be.    I like to get the shape close and round the outside of the scales, then flatten the liner side.   There's quite a variety in the material out there too.   Some is nice to work with like the stuff on that wenger, and other horn can be really plasticy and translucent and tough to make work on a SAK.
