Gareth, I just found this thread. MTO has such a diverse territory to cover. Especially when time is a premium. Thanks very much for sharing. Great pictures too for the unitiated.
Yeah, you right...

Rockin' tutorial, Gareth. Served me well during my first mod: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,26220.0.html

Two observations from my newbie perspective:
1. Oil, oil, and more oil. Really helps slide those tools into place and surprisingly helpful with getting the springs set.
2. Ball peen hammers rock, but make sure you are using one that has enough mass to really make a difference. I started with a jeweler's hammer, but the 4 oz or whatever it is just wouldn't do much peening on the hard brass. Mid way through I bought a 16 oz head and wow -- what a difference!

Horses for courses.  Heaviest one I use is 8oz and the smallest 1oz :)
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Very glad it was helpful. :)  I will say though that the hammer I use the most is the 6oz ball-peen that's in the shots.  Still, it's about what works for you that matters. :tu:

I think I'll pick up an 8oz the next time I hit the hardware store (sadly, in the small town I live finding more specialized weights -- less than 8oz -- will prove difficult). The 16oz worked really well, but I did have to be careful not to use too much oomph and distort the pin shaft as opposed to just mushrooming the head.

Same around here.  My 4ox and 1oz were ordered online.  At least with them not weighing much the postage was cheap :)

These are the two hammers I like to use for modding. The the small one I think is 4oz the other is a one pound carpet hammer.

Just wanted to say thank you for this tutorial. I've assembled all the donors, as well as the brass and new scales for my soon to be built Scimechanist. Probably wouldn't have had the guts if it weren't for the detailed explanation you gave.

Many thanks to Gareth for this how to. I never would have attempted modding with out it. And thanks to SOSAK's Rotokid for the very useful modding aids.
Latest mod, mixed up from a fleamarket, damaged Cybertool 29 and a heavily damaged, fleamarket, 80's vintage Champion.

Thank you... high praise indeed, coming from both of you!! It's been a fun learning experience.
Still a lot to learn, and somewhat addictive too.  :D

I polished the contact surfaces of that hammer, it seems to make it "stick" (if that makes any sense at all) less to the brass rod when edge peening. I was also kinda suprised I could not find quality 4 oz. and 8 oz. ball peen hammers locally. Had to order the hammers online.

That does make sense, I like to keep my balls shiny as well .... that sounds so wrong  :-[

I've got a few hammers now, that I've picked up from car boot sales but when I first started assembling SAKs I had to order a couple.  Turns out that locally I can only get huge hammers ::)

This one goes everywhere with me. I'd like it one layer thinner for EDC but I refuse to give up any of the tools to make that happen. Sadly, the magnifying glass get the least use but it ups the cool factor enough to keep it in place.

Thanks again for the tutorial. My next project is a Midnight Rambler with whistle scale while somehow keeping the toothpick/tweezers on board. I'm off to do more research.

So you don't put any glue at the end were the tooth pick & pen go in  , I would be tempted to put a small amount on the SAK's pin at that end  but I guess you would run the risk of clogging up the tooth pick & pen's slots doing that .
The plastic scales should still click into place , I have wondered about the challenge of gluing wooden scales without clogging up the scale tool's slots   .
I have wondered if smearing petroleum jelly into the slots would stop the glue clogging them up

You are really right - the scales keep very well without adhesive as well.
But - there is something ... I can´t express it - something like untightness, that occurs and that irritates myself. (Epoxide can solute ethanol/clear alcohol as well. Light dust is the rest of milling and can be removed easily.)
