spring loaded center punch is the way to go, everything else is a rip-off.

Welcome aboard! Most of my fire service time was in a rural/small town VFD before going to EMS.What's been your primary experience?

mostly wildland/urban interface with a very liberal dose of metro, rural and "pure" wildland thrown in for good measure.

my current house is in a residential area; the average size home is approx. 3500 sq ft and it goes up from there, we also respond up into the foothills on the eastern end of our battalion.

this house is for the "old" guys and is supposed to be slow $:-\$

I'm retiring in Sept; can't wait to go, I've had my fill - it's on to bigger and better things!

naw.....central California, east side of the san Joaquin valley although my dept covers the un-incorperated area from 6000' in the sierra nevada clear over to the montery county line in the coast ranges.

big area; very, very diverse.

all of our engines are rescue engines: we also have a heavy rescue in the central part of the district that responds any where it's needed.

we serve 2600 square miles and 150,000 citizens with 11 engine companies, 1 ladder, 1 heavy/swift water rescue 1 rescue boat 1 squad, 2 brush patrols, 6 water tenders and 1 state oes engine.

our staffing leaves much to be desired, we run 2-0 staffed except the ladder which is 3-0 and 2 engines staffed 3-0. budgets are very stretched as you might imagine.

how about you? what's your dept like?

That's a lot of territory to cover with that little bit of resources.I wouldn't want the headache of covering staffing for vacations.
My old dept,like I said was a VFD,serving about 4500 people in 6 sq miles.Apparatus is 3 engines,1 rescue,and one command truck out of one station. I took a look at the most recent TOE,and it's very officer heavy.1 Chief,2 Ass't Chiefs,2 Deputy Chiefs,4 Capts,4 Lt's and 24 FF. When I was there and active I was a Driver/Engineer,I see that my old unit number is now assigned to a Lt.

BTW,my great-uncle was a major player in organizing some FD's in Northern Cal,in and around the Truckee area.

I bought it off a forum member on here but it didn't include the sheath . The seller did tell me before I bought it

which I have attached to my lifejacket at all times but its very low quality steel and doesn't take a very good edge . My Vic Spirit believe it of not has a slightly longer cutting edge and out performs it several times over .And I can deploy it nearly as quick . The fixed blade does have a serrated edge which is passable .I will only use it in emergancies when I need one handed deployment .The key thing in my job is to have something the public won't be scared of and the Spirit is well suited and with the blunt tip its ideal and really shines in its role

I have two Ti rings which have a screw in glass breaker but! I will get one of those ResQmes tools,as I fear in a crisis fiddling and trying to screw a tip into my ring would waist valuable seconds

I should point out I don't really have two my wife has one and I the other

To be honest I doubt the efficienty of a ring mounted window breaker. Your finger bone is pretty weak, so the question is really which is going to break first, your finger or window?

My father has 25 years fire fighter and other than a blade he had a spring loaded punch and with a Brother going into the department I was looking for a good gift for him I was thinking the Vic rescue tool but there sure are alot out there.
Are there firefighters out there who use this or have a fav. I know the punch but is there any other tried and tru ones out there not not just a glove box rescue tool.

I own several ResQmes and mine all work just fine as a punch and as a seat-belt cutter. There really is no need in my opinion to need a replaceable blade, because it's not something that I would play around with. I keep it at the ready and am confident with it after only the one test.

I have one of mine mounted in my truck, by the way. I pulled the headliner out, and punched 2 holes just before the center globe. A grommet in each hole, and the key ring threaded through. It becomes easily accessed by any user in the vehicle, and have no fear that it will get lost in a roll over or a swim.

The others are on various bags I carry, in case I come across a roll over victim, or am on a search (member in training GSAR)

In any case, I'm fairly sure if I smack a window with a pair of vicegrips I'll be able to break it, & I've always got a SAK on me to cut whatever needs cutting.

There are several ResQme videos on YouTube that show how it works. I have some and need to get more.

I have a Glock 23 in my console. I suppose that will take out a window. Not too good on belts though!

I have a ResQme on my car key. I hope I will never need it. I might get a Vic rescue tool one day.

Bought another ResQme for my better half, but I haven't seen it for weeks. He doesn't believe he will need it, he sais he can always release a seat-belt, no matter in what situation. He took it anyway, just to make me feel better, but now it's not in the car and not on his keys
