Haven't read it yet, but I have seen the movie and I really liked it.... thought that Dr Manhattan's "multitool" was a bit excessive in so many scenes, but other than that I really enjoyed it.

Seventeen years since I read it.  I was crashing at a mates house and as he was out at lectures most of the time so I read it in a couple of days.  I really should read it again.

there are a lot of side stories that complement the main story and thousands of detail to get you in the story, i covers events from arround 1938 to 1985 via fragments of books, magazines and newspapers and the end of each of the 12 issues

to me, it speaks about how insignificat we are, even if we manage to "save the world"

Whilst I'd never dismissed graphic novels out of hand as nothing more than a comic (in the Beano sense) like many do, I did very much regard them as being light entertainment.  This book changed that.

Great book.  I first read it about 15 years ago and then again when the film was first announced.  cliosguy has summed up the plot well, but for me the big thing it is about is; what kind of messed-up individual puts on a pair of tights and mask to fight crime? 

For those who haven't read it be warned it is very dark and NOT for kids.

I also went to see the film a couple of days back and, if you haven't seen it yet, you have to go.  I genuinely don't know how he could have done a better job without changing or loosing to much.  I suspect that people who have read the book will get more out of it but film fans should like it to.

your right, watchmen changed anything, from black and white worlds when good and evil were clear and the good guy always triumph over the bad guy to a real world were goverment, society, and the heroes arent good or bad, theyre human beings with good sides and very dark ones VERY DARK ONES, just like the real wolrd......and also is important the way the story is told, its almost like your watching a movie, Dave Gibbons did a magnificent work on that aspect
