A little scale mod.
on: March 22, 2009, 11:38:29 PM

I hear you grumble, "so what, its another Scientist"  That's true but look more closely at the back scale...

It has has two sets of tweezers.  This is a nice easy mod that anyone with a reasonably modern plussed SAK and a small file can do.  The slot for the little tweezers is already there on most plussed back scales.  All you have to do is open up the end  :tu:

I chopped the end from the normal tweezers to make them pointy.  I know its not the most inspirational mod but it is easy and adds tool density for the cost of an extra set of tweezers.

Neil
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Nice one. One day, I will make wooden "plus" scales, but so far I've lost my bottle each time I've come to do it.
I used to come here a lot.

Nice one Neil :tu:

Tool density..........sounds like an affliction of sorts. :D
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

If you want pointy tweezers on a Wenger,  get the ones they make for the Minathor.
(They can be purchased separately)

I may be heading over to Otto Frei some time soon.

All Wengers that have tweezers.   Their metal-scaled offerings and the Rangers don't, of course.
I have swapped tweezers in my 557 and several other Wenger SAKs.

Who'd have thought they'd be room to get an extra tool into a 58mm SAK scale  :o  Excellent  :tu:

The "secret" to the space constrain is to use shorten and pointed tweezer/toothpick.  Similar to the Minathor tweezer someone posted above.

After managing to hold on to 3 of the handles implement, I'm getting more and more greedy.  Now, I'm thinking of shifting both the tweezer and toothpick to the "compartments" thus freeing up one side of the handle for the laser pointer!.......  :D   :climber:

As I'm in silly mods mood at the moment I've been contemplating putting together a Mini Champ XLT.  I have a slight quandary though, how do I fit the laser, red LED, white LED, stylus, pen, toothpick, tweezers and of course whistle on to one knife   :P

This I gotta see!

You have to get the USB stick in there too!

You could mount a second set of scales on the inside of the space you put the USB stick in  (making it larger to compensate).
That can hold toothpick, tweezers, pen, and stylus.
You could put a red and a white LED in the same scale, press bottom of logo for red, top of logo for white.
laser pointer on the other scale.

Standard implements like thumb drive etc can be added without "too much trouble".  It is the scale's implements that is a headache.  Ironically, I seen to be more interested in the scale's implements.......  :twak:

Actually my next project is something similar to yours except for the whistle and red LED.   One side will have white LED while the other scale will be laser pointer.  Tweezer, toothpick, stylus, pen will be shifted to the "compartment".  Of course, they will have to be custom build to fit into the "compartment".  The 1 9/16" (39.7mm) M3 mini refill http://www.coloradopen.com/category/Monteverde_Ballpoint_Pen_Refills shown here seen like a good mod candidate!

If you really want to keep all the eight scale's implements, you'll have to either mod a couple of scales for the layers or to custom build some enclosures for those electronics.   Possible but will be a challenge to make it as slim as possible yet remain aesthetically pleasing, durable......

This will be a silly SAK so I'm not fussed about keeping it slimline, quite the opposite in fact, fatter the better.  I'm not going to let scales get in the way of things.  I might just go for LED one side and whistle the other to make things chunky.  There could be a slight delay though as my local model shop is no longer carrying metric brass :(

Just done this, Excellent mod. I used the Swiss champ metal saw to chop down the tweezers to fit, a fine job it did.  :climber:
