powerlock v-cutter
on: June 05, 2009, 04:31:19 PM
Is there anyone here who has a strong and legitimate opinion on the powerlock v-cutter? Do you find it very useful or useless? And by legitimate I mean you have used it quite a bit or have had one for a long time and have found no use for it.
Thanks

on the sog powerlock that I got from crouton it works great.  I use it for cutting paper of all things as opposed to the scissors.  on my black powerlock it binds up so I have to really try and touch up the edge on the sharpmaker.  I think it's a pretty worthwhile cutter if the edge is kept up.  The one tool I haven't an opportunity to try and most likely won't is the 1/4 socket driver.  Handy I guess if you keep a socket kit with your tool.

Used mine a lot when I was doing B&W photography, cuts mats quite well, and makes short work of cutting negatives and paper.  To pull cuts and my neg was was cut, one pull cut and my paper was cut.  It worked for me at least.

Hmm.. So far only the fans of the v-cutter have posted. There are no v cutter haters out there? Maybe later. :D

I have at the moment no use for it so I will swap it out with a serrated blade.
There is no problem that cannot be solved by the use of high explosives.

Funny you say that, just 2 days ago I took out the v cutter from my powerassist and replaced it with a more useful saw. I'v had the power assist for almost 6 months (admittedly I barely used it) but not once did I use the v cutter.

The v cutter came with my new powerlock doesn't cut worth crap. Maybe I'm expecting too much wanting it to cut as well as my folders.  ??? Anyway I replaced it with the serrated line cutter, at least I can sharpen it instead of have to throw it out and buy a new one.

Before I owned a V-cutter I had scissors in my Powerlock.  I first got to use it in the Powerlock 2.0 passaround here, and soon after that I bought one from EODTech and put it in my EDC tool.

When I had the 2.0, I had to unpack lots of antique furnature that was wrapped tight with heavy paper and twine.  The V-Cutter was used dozens of times to pop that twine and there was no chance of scratching or ripping the antique furnature underneath.  It could have been done with a razor knife or a folder, but the V-Cutter was easier, safer, and faster.

I've used mine lots since for things like that where you have to cut something thats really tight against something like a zip tie or plastic strapping...the V-cutter just hooks in and pops it.

It's good but you can't really sharpen it... To be honest, I prefer Benchmade Rescue hooks.. They are far superior, IMO. The one on the Charge TTi/XTi/ALX work extremely well too..

there is really no comparison.the charge tti hook blade does not waste space like the v cutter does by simply just having a sharp cutting hook, the tti blade also has a serrated edge and can be sharpened unlike the v hook.

What if the V-cutter becomes dull? just throw it away and order another one?

honestly, i'm not sure. i think sog sells the replacement blades but you would have to send them the v cutter for them to put them on. i think thats how it works. :-\ but if my experience is the norm, you will not see that v cutter for a looooooooooooong time. i ordered some powerlock components from them once and they took forever and they bagged them all in the same ziplock bag. by the time they got to me they were scratched up and the blade edge was dinged up. they might have life time service but my experience is that their quality of service is mediocre at best. :(

those are specific for the Bi-Polar knife, the SOG MTs use a diferent v-cutter with the blades riveted

I see the V-Cutter as a backup/secondary kind of impliment...if you use the V-Cutter so much that it wears out and you're buying new ones, you should get a dedicated tool for that use :D  Same thing with files on multitools...if you're constantly using it and wearing it down, then you need a dedicated file!

Multitools are like that for me, fast and convenient tools where "real" tools aren't around.

here is my email exchange with the sog warranty department regarding the v-cutter.

dear SOG warranty person,
i have a question regarding the powerlock v-cutter.
is the v-cutter covered under your warranty, meaning if my v-cutter becomes dull and dysfunctional do to regular use, does sog replace it or the blades on it?
thanks

Hi,

No, we don’t.  You can actually purchase the components on our website if you need one.  The only things that are covered on the Power lock warranty wise are the plier head, hex bolts, rivets and links, and the handles.  Let me know if you have any other questions.
