Evil's Inline Ratcheting Bit Driver
on: August 14, 2011, 07:23:36 PM
Hey gang. Evil here again. Here is something I came up with about a year ago (sorry for the late posting). It has become my singular most used accessory (and most favorite) all across the board. I have used it countless times over the past year and it has earned it's keep as part of my EDC. I am constantly removing multiple fasteners. Before I created this, if I was only dealing with a few fasteners, I didn't mind using my multitool. However, what I found was that whenever I was dealing with let's say 10+ fasteners, I would always end up making a run for my dedicated ratcheting screwdriver so that I could work faster and more efficiently. This was my solution to that issue. The goal was to come up with something as compact as possible that would be up to the task of replacing my dedicated screwdriver. If it were too big and bulky, I know I would never end up EDC'ing it. It works with all of my tools with the large bit driver (Skeletool, Wave, Surge, my pocketknife project). Just as with my extended bit driver project, this is also extra deep in order to hold the leatherman style bits adequately and also uses an extra strong neodymium magnet.....

~ evil ~

Weight of a typical 1/4" hex bit driver, 22.6 grams.....

Weight of my Inline Ratcheting Bit Driver, 24.7 grams. A difference of 2.1 grams. In practical terms, a US penny weighs in at 2.5 grams, so the weight difference practically unnoticeable.....

Side profile comparison shot.....

Front view comparison shot.....

Rear view, close-up shot.....

Front view, close-up shot.....

Side view, close-up shot.....

And last but not least, the video demo. Please excuse the crappy ass quality as the video was taken about a year and four cellphones ago. I'll make another if/when I ever get the chance to do so.....

I've never modded my multis or things related (to afraid to ruin them, and knowing how hard I got them...) but I can tell true craftmanship... At the end I'm mechanical engineer, I'm suposed to know that things   :D

I don't want one ground down! I just want to know where you found a ratcheting driver head that fits into a 1/4" hex driver.

I searched and searched to no avail, that is why I created this.....

I love it.  I am now on the hunt for a racheting screwdriver to to breakdown to do this too.  Any idea where to start?
I had no luck in my hunt. All of the likely candidates I found for modding were so large that I might as well have just carried a dedicated ratcheting screwdriver. Compactness was part of the goal in making this. It would have been great to have found something I could just cut and reshape and be done with, it sure would have saved me time and effort. Still to this day, I look at every ratcheting screwdriver that I come across to see if they would be a viable candidate for an easy mod into something like this.....

I don't want one ground down! I just want to know where you found a ratcheting driver head that fits into a 1/4" hex driver.
I could have left out the last stage of this mod to fit all standard hex drivers. This was created as an addition to my EDC kits of Leatherman bits. It is nothing that I found. It is actually three components. The inner ratcheting mechanism was salvaged from a ratcheting screwdriver, the shaft was made from scratch and the head was created from a deep well socket in order for the Leatherman style bits to sit in deeply, as well as to insert the neodymium magnet. I actually still use it with my standard 1/4" hex drivers as well, that is why the standard rounded cuts are there as well in order to engage with the locking mechanisms of the various hex drivers.....

If/when time permits, I may play around with different versions of this but as is, I am very backlogged with all of my other work.....

Trying one of these on my own. With a twist. I want to add to this, with permission. A 1/4 drive with interchangeable sockets/screwdriver bits.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

Apologies for the late reply. Until I created this one, the 1/4" socket drive was the original plan for Project Skeletool. I never found the one that I prototyped or I would have sent it to you. The ratcheting screwdriver I sent you should be a great base for your project. It many ways, it is almost identical to the unit I initially started off with, only smaller and with a slightly different internal mechanism. One day, I had planned on making different variations of it, but, simply haven't been able to get around to doing so. I started tinkering with the other one I kept for myself and have a leftover super stubby 1/4" socket drive I've made for other projects that I'll end up installing since I have no need for two bit drivers. Anyway, let me know how things work out or if you need and help along the way.....

I made my own evil ratchet driver today. i figured it out it was pretty easy to make. I am going to rig it to work on leathermans and Swiss army knifes. Fun mod.

Great going on the mod there, Mike. Looks Identical to the Harbor Freight unit I sent to tattoosteve. He made one as well. Very similar to the unit I started off with. I ended up doing things the hard way since, at the time, I found nothing suitable. The HF unit makes for a great light-medium duty version  :tu:

Wished I had the facilities and knowledge to make one too. That looks bonzer!

Can only hope that someone talented like y'all will offer them for sale or swap at some point in time. I looked at some cheap screwdriver ratchets at Home Depot then walked away. Never seen one with a dial chuck. The ones here seem to have a slide button to change directions, which ofter require whacking it against something so the lever inside "catches".

It's pretty easy to make if you have a harbor freight close by. Just get the finger ratchet and remove it. Then attach the quarter inch bit to it. Grind a little so it fits the bit holder on wave/multi and poof. Done.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

I'd have to order one. Any recommendation(s) as to which model number? Mind a bit fuzzy today, got a bug last night... and had my flu shot just last week too.

Why yes I do.

This is the one I used. You will have to order it from amazon though. The quarter inch bit that comes with the kit is the one I used.

Thanks mate! Ordered one just now from Amazon. Not many of the rascals are left in stock. Probably won't be any more in stock soon!  :D
