I haven't carried an Opi in ages.  :(  Gonna have to remedy that in the next few days, probably my carbon #6.  I did get a carbon #10 in a trade not that long ago, it's a monster!  :o
You should try a #12, now that's a big knife.  The #13 is just silly. :D

I'm not sure about how silly it is.

I might choose that over a Kabar if I had the need for one.

Don't get me wrong, not for a moment am I saying it's a bad knife, but despite that video I still question how practical it would be as a tool.  Why not get a machete?  Or a bowie?  I've got a hatchet that is shorter that that thing is when it is folded. :D

Here are some of my Opi's.
The first two are about 20 years old, maybe a tad older.
The others are some newer Inox models.

Just got my first Opinel for my birthday. It's a very posh Opinel 8 Inox Mountain Legends Rosace.

I really do like the thing and I can't put it down, but I am not a convert yet:
Pros:
  • Gorgeous design, even if a bit crude
  • Beautiful, sharp, pointy blade
  • Very very light
  • Great ergonomics
  • Flawless locking system
  • From the yatagan blade, to the curvy wooden handle, to the shiny ring, gorgeous markings and fascinating tang it oozes French charm

Cons:
  • Locking blade so no chance for edc
  • Blade feels bendy
  • Blade finishing is atrocious (maybe Vic spoiled me)
  • Opening the blade and locking it is a chore.. my fingers are red from pushing on pointy steel
  • It's... wood - it doesn't cry out endurance

In conclusion, I really love this little toy. I won't be getting the whole 11 set though. I'm keeping this Mountain Legends 8, and will be getting a Nr.2 Pomme and a Nr.13 (for wall-hanging really).

PS: Beechwood looks far far better than in photos. I wanted to get an Olive one but the beech is just awesome.

Yeah, I have to agree.

There seems to be  trend in knives and the people who love them, to go as extreme as one can. No matter how ridiculous a length it may be. If I was going to be chopping and whacking stuff, I'd just go with a 12 inch Ontario machete, but then I love small machete's. It's impressive how that number 13 did, but how often can you get away with that before it breaks? Even for it's size, it's not really that strongly built, compared with even a low cost machete that will be both lighter in weight and cheaper to buy. It may be big, but it's still a folder.
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

Opinel knives are very good, but for camping and outdoors stuff, the folding saws are great!

Here's my 3rd Opinel - an Opinel 2 Pomme which I was looking for for ages.

It comes as a late birthday present from my colleagues, together with a nifty Led Lenser K2L (and yes I chose the gifts myself  ::) )

It's a really neat little knife and everybody loved it. The blade is the same length as a Vic Classic, only pointier and curved forward quite a bit (to help on the cutting angle). The body is about 1 cm shorter than the Vic.

All in all, an adorable little thing, not sure what I'll be using for, but it's too cute not to use.

Next up on the list is an Opinel 13.

As you said, too cute not to use. I think you'll be surprised at how much can be handled by a small but sharp blade. How much do we really need to open mail, a UPS box, but twine, or slice open a plastic blister package? I use the blade of my Vic classic on all kinds of stuff daily. That little knife will also cut a jammed seat belt.

My better half's Opinel I gave her for a Valentines day gift many years ago. She keeps it in her purse as her edc knife. Here it's with the Sardinian resolza I carry as a pocket knife sometimes. P{ic taken at a campout at Assateague Island National Seashore.

The qualities I like most about the Opinels are the cheapness and expendability.  I like the fact that I can use it hard, and if I break it, I can have another one just like it for not-much coin.

I got an Opinel DIY

This, unlike the Outdoor is build on the No9 frame.

Here you can see it under a regular No9.
Below it it has the Outdoor, followed by a standard No8, for comparison.

The blade, like the Mushroom model, is small for the frame, closer to an 8 size blade than the 9. See the space between the tip of the blade and the edge of the "pocket" inside the knife.

The blade is not any thicker than the regular blades.
Also note, in the 1st picture, that the blade is similar to a "cotton sampler" blade, with the part with the notches being unsharpened.
The handle is just plain plastic, with no rubber inserts like the Outdoor model has.
The two screwdriver bits are held too securely, making it hard to actually remove them and use them. When you use them a magnet, and friction, holds them in place.

I am not going to actually use it....   :ahhh

Feels like a regular No9, which is a pretty good size for me, but the plastic handles feel a bit cheap, though not hard plastic cheap.

It is the looser feeling Opinel I have handled. The locking ring and the blade do not have the usual, friction related, feel of other Opinels, including the also plastic Outdoor.

................but for around 20 Euro it is not bad.
The bits are a pain to get out...
