The Gohons aka Gerber Shears, Spring Loaded (pic heavy)
on: September 22, 2011, 10:15:44 PM
FINALLY! my Paul Chen Multitaskers (PCMT) came in.

That only means one thing, disassembly and modding time.

Gerber shears aren't new around here, but there were 2 inherent problems with the simple drop in shear head.

1. It couldn't be one hand opening (like the Geber MP series)
2. The shears aren't spring loaded once they are transplanted.

So, I really enjoy the look of the shear heads on the PCMT, so tactical, so ninja. So this projects name is the GOHONS (Gerber One Hand Opening Ninja Shears). Sounds Japanese, good enough for me!

I won't show how the shears are removed, pretty simple, 4 screws and it slide right out. Extracting the springs was another issue. Out came the grinder and a couple of minutes later, the torsion spring was out from it's cage.

Putting them into a pair of MP600 handles was as easy as removing them from the PCMT. Once the screws were tensioned right, the head slid in and out pretty easy. Problem one solved.

When the shears are closed, I encountered another problem, the shear heads poked out. A very clear and present danger. I remember seeing this thread: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,19667.msg371869.html#msg371869. kl27x extended the channel on the MP400 to close down the plier heads. I haven't done that yet to the GOHONS but that is next up.

You can see that the channe is much longer on the PCMT.

Now to solve problem 2, the spring loaded part. I am sorry I didn't take more pics of this portion but its pretty easy to explain. Basically I drilled 2 sets of holes, one set will catch the spring legs and one set is tapped to accept a bolt to hold the spring in place. On the PCMT there is a plastic cover and two bent steel pins that hold the spring in place. The spring legs were bent to slide into the lower set of holes and then the bolts screwed into place. Both of these items were ground to the exact depth so it wouldn't interfere with shear heads sliding in and out.

And the shear heads back installed.

and closed.

The poke head is still a problem. I take care of that later.

A side by side comparison, the Gohons head actually open wider.

Don't berieve me? hehe, here's a video of the flick and shear.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/100thousandquestions/6172616753/#secrete760cb4cb5in/photostream

[flash=http://www.flickr.com/apps/video/stewart.swf?v=71377]http://width="400" height="225" flashvars="intl_lang=en-us&photo_secret=e760cb4cb5&photo_id=6172616753" bgcolor="#000000" allowFullScreen="true"[/flash]

I think it's time to go grind down the channel close down the shear head more. This may require a regrind of some of the internal tools. I was never really satisfied with the tools on the inside, so modifying those brings no hurt to my soul.

To the MPC LAB!

*grinding, filing, hammer, buzzing noises*

ok, back from the shop!

First, extend the channel using the awesome exploding red discs of death on the dremel. Filing the channel to fit the locks and boom.

The shears slide in all the way.

BUT, not with out cost. Some of the flat bit drivers and cap lifter had to be re profiled to accommodate the lowered shear head. I took this opportunity to make an awl out of the smallest flat head driver, no Ninja is full equipped without an awl.

And that is how you polish a turd PCMT into a magical set of spring loaded, ninja tactical shears.

Behold! The GOHONS!

Hey, aren't those the big honkin', girth adding socket screws from the Mjolnirman?  :pok:

That thing has EOD written all over it. Very cool, very tactical, very ninja.

They sure are!

I later swapped out those for some slimmer, button bolts but I thought this particular mod deserved some heavy, tactical, ninja, black ones. The only other option, if and when I got to the hardware store is to source some black bolt head ones and slim them down a bit before installing them.

so far, I like the crosscut look :)

On the crosscut, they put the springs inside the metal:

Whereas on the crossgrip, the springs are on the outside:

As I recall, there was one Emperor of Japan who hired gardeners from a remote part of his realm. No one got the joke until there was an assassination attempt. Ninja + pruning sheers = shorter assassins.  :D

My entire masters thesis was based on the "hidden until needed" concept!

I think I may make more ninja parts for this, maybe a tango blade and a hook?

Can anyone take a pic of the Freehand/Flik and a MP600?

I want to know if I can make a pair of Freehand Shears.

Sorry to necro this thread but I have some new ideas regarding this project.

After FINALLY getting a couple of pairs of leatherman OHTs I finally have a reason to mod something again.

Lets take a look:

You can see is that the OHT is a taller, perfect because the shears would sit proud unless you extend the channel like I did.

The channel is a lot thinner on the OHT. This means one of two thing. I have to either widen these channels or I have to thin out the sliding pivot. I would rather open up the channel.

Over all, the outside tools would be a winner combined with a set of shears.

The OHT is a fair bit roomier than the MP600 so adding an internal spring mechanism won't be that hard.

Just look at this! Over laying the tools, the head looks great!!

One more shot.

This calls for a rename, not sure what. Leatherman OHTS? One Hand Tactical Shear?

I like the idea of the LM OHT(S). I just do not have the know how to do something like this. Would you post your method pics of this mod (if you have them)?

(Image removed from quote.)

The hardest part will be widening the channel so the sliding pivots can clear, the spring too. Other than those two operations, it wont be that hard.

I plan to set up my mill over the christmas break and i might able to do it then. Just keeping you guys up on the up :)

Bah!

Tool apart the OHT, not as simple in construction as the MP600, it's nice to see.

In case you guys were wondering.

There needs to be spacers made for the mating surfaces. This may not work!

Since the mp600 is so much slimmer (would never think to say that), the shears aren't wide enough.

But that's a good thing isn't it, Eric?

It means you've got space to add in some Tufnol, Shamban or other slideway material to make the shears deploy even smoother than Gerber or LM pliers  (assuming you can get suitable screws that is )

I know it won't stump you for long mate  ;)

I have some nylon that would work, but I worry that there won't be enough weight to shoot them out.

Your right, I put aside to work on the Commander :)

Hmmm ... I'm wondering if nylon might be a bit too grippy  Even if not, it might deform and jam up the deployment if you try to cut heavy materials  (I've used it for fashioning thread locking devices before the same way)

No. There is a bit of play between the blades. No notch either. I mean, you could probably grind on in, but they'll never cut though coat hanger
