TTi breaking nails!
« on: January 30, 2012, 12:24:27 AM »
HALP!  :ahhh

I picked up a decent TTi used and gave it lots of TLC including a nice WD40 bath, rust removal and clean.

Everything is great ecept he 1/4" bit and can opener are really damn hard to  get out. I'm assuming the only thing I can do is
loosen the torx pin a little, which I do do not have the tools for.

So, firstly am I barking up the right tree?
And secondly, can anyone tell me where to get the right bits to get it done?

Thank you muchly

Try putting some mineral oil on it and working it open and closed for a bit.  That may help.  I would try that before I tried loosening the pivots.

If you have to go so far as to loosen the pivots I would first check eBay.  It's a gold mine for odd bits and bobs like them.

Yes, I'll try some heavier oil.... I did try working it back and forth for ages earlier, but it's not letting up :(

You can also try "flossing" it with some unwaxed dental floss.  Try to work it deep into the joints to see if you can work any crud out.  If you don't have any unwaxed dental floss you can also try thread, although I would loop a few strands together for strength.

Genius! I'll give that a go.

Hunted down some T10 bits just in case.

The fasteners come in 5-star and 6-star configurations. Be sure to get the proper bits for yours. :)

And they are T10H (not T10) - Security Torx ;) and you will need 2 of them.

Also quick hint for Charge TTi disassembly: The 'in handle tools' pivot is tapered on one side and goes through specially shaped hole. If you turn the pivot instead of screw you will damage the hole. The screw should be on the Large Bit Driver (for the bottle opener/driver side) and on the side of scissors (fro the other side). You can always distinguish the screw from the pivot by the head - pivot head looks like it was little bit ground down and the screw has nice sharp ring around the slot on the head.

Right, it's been oiled and fiddled with a lot and seems to be giving way a little bit...

I ever took pics of it to celebrate! They are elsewhere... won't make it easy :D

I ALWAYS loosen those pivot points about an 1/8 of a turn, that's all it takes. The threads are super fin.

Why stop now?

I got my 5-star torx from amazon uk. There is one seller there with them, if you get desparate.

If it's security torx you can just pop out that little pin in the center then it works just fine.

It did occur to me I could do that, but hopefully I won't need to!
