Backpack for EDC
« on: February 11, 2012, 01:19:24 AM »
  Hi fellas,

Just hoping you can throw some advicethis way. What is a good EDC backpack. 24hr version will be plenty enough. Looking for a two strrap model not a gear slinger, unless you can convince me otherwise.

OD Green , Tan, Khaki, Brown Earth,.  No Camo or Black. Good water wicking , and no more then 200$.

Thanks guys,

UNS

If you can't afford Maxped, look up Phantom on eBay. Near identical Maxped copies, down to the loops. Quality is about 9/10 and they use 1000D PU Cordura.

Typically they are 50-60% of Maxped.

You could try the 5.11 Rush pack too, lots of great reviews.

5.11 Rush 24 looks like a real good bag. I just wish there were some posts from posters with real experience with them.

Thanks,

I use one of these except in Coyote brown, but i have to bike 3 to 4 miles to work and back with ~ 30lbs of books, so it might be a bit large for your purposes

UNS,
Not sure if it's too late, but I have been using the Rush 24 for about a year now.  I have added and subtracted pouches, organized and re-organized.  I prefer it over a couple of Swiss Gear, Adidas, and others that I have tried.  I wear it while riding my motorcycle almost everyday, or carry it in my truck.  It is a little big, but I have filled it on occasion during changing weather.

I'll just toss out there I use Cilogear backpacks.  They are all day comfortable, are highly water resistant to nearly waterproof and are designed for heavy alpine use.   They also make a city bag, which has a laptop pocket.

Excellent handcrafted product.

I don't have the Rush bag, but I do have a fair amount of other 5.11 stuff.  Everything I've used so far has been excellent.

I have owned the RUSH 24 for about two years now and absolutely love it!

Prior to owning the RUSH 24 I had a Maxpedition Monsoon Gearslinger that I loathed! I sent it back to Maxpud, got the 24 and haven't looked back. Too bad the price of this pack has nearly doubled since I bought mine.

I've owned a few bags made by Maxped, Spec Ops, Blackhawk and a 5.11 Rush and come to the conclusion that all the military looking ones are way over-engineered for my uses, and therefore stupidly heavy. I am not about to be dropped in to a war zone from a helicopter, or drag a 200lb casualty up a hill, so recognising my needs and being realistic about them was the first step.

I also ended up with pouch lego madness (which is great fun but deeply impractical), and had additions adding more weight and not really any more function over all. My joints don't like weight, so this is a primary issue for anything I carry.

My journey this far has taken me all the way back to more simplistic, lightweight but well made bags. I look for bags with just the basic amount of organisation, lots of comfort and try and buy from companies which use recycled materials if possible too. My internal organisation is where it works, as I use smaller kits I can transfer according to my needs that day.

So all that said, my current EDC bags are the Minimass from Patagonia and a Deuter Speedlite 20 for more load.
I am really happy with them both :)

Hear hear!  I find little appeal in many of the Maxped or 5.11 etc. bags.  Tacti-cool just doesn't do it for me; more weight, and more complications, and complications are the last thing I want more of in my life.

I also bike a lot and a backpack is just plain uncomfortable and difficult to use for biking.  When I was in my mid-twenties, I worked as a bike messenger in San Francisco and started using real messenger bags, and haven't looked back since.  Not that backpacks don't have their place, they do, but for my needs, a messenger bag works far better.

Regardless, whether you prefer a backpack or a messenger bag, I have had nothing but good luck and outstanding customer service from Timbuk2 Designs.  They're a maker in San Francisco and I've been using their stuff for over 20 years, and they've never even once let me down.  You can order a stock product, or you can customize to your specs.  Absolutely the best bags I've ever used.

I'm gonna point at the bottom price range here... you could go with a JanSport Rightpack in OD green. They have reinforced leather bottoms, and will successfully hold at least 30lbs of material. Pretty roomy, with one large compartment, and 2 smaller ones. About $50... with lifetime warranty.

I've had one for about 6 years, used constantly, and holding up great with a pretty heavy load in it. I can't speak for comfort over long hikes, but I will say it is the kind of backpack that draws NO attention, if that's an important factor for you.
