Honestly, I was concerned becuase of the reviews. But I did like it- just not as much as LOTR, and many of the reasons why I only give it an 8.5 our of ten are the same reasons I give the LOTR triology a 9.0.

Oh, and I didn't see a need to have it be 3D- save yourself some money, buy popcorn and watch the 2D

SPOLIERS- haven't seen it? go away, don't read

I'm not thrilled with most of the changes. The trip to Rivendell, unneeded and disappointing.  Radagast's hair and bunnysled, disturbing. The one-armed orc, stupid. I'd have rather seen the origional treeing of the party, but... I'll live. Really didn't like when the Red Book started being written, that is a massive violation of cannon.

There were things that I saw that make me want to get my copy of the Simarillion when I visit my folks this weekend. I tried to read it 20 years ago and quit, but I think quite a bit of the valuable parts of Radagast's appearance might be from there.

And while I agree with Ryan that this might be considered more little kid friendly than LOTR, it wasn't on par with the little people friendliness of the book

Changes I did like is that Thorin is much more there to me. I didn't like him in the book, thinking him a pompous little lordling, but I like this imagining of him.

And I would give a lot to be able to sharpen a blade to the level of Glamdring! Gandalf is still the most badsmurf wizard ever.

Long term concerns... I didn't know how they were going to get two movies out of the Hobbit, but THREE???? Three? Really? At least there is no excuse for cutting Beorn. Peter Jackson still owes the world for having cut Tom!

I've been avoiding this thread like an epidose of Jersey Shore. I wanted to go see it without spoilers, opinions, and the like.

Went and saw it this morning.  :tu:

I really liked it. Of course i knew there would be major deviations from print. I hear they are destroying world war z just like I am legend.

O well..5 bucks for close to 3 hours of entertainment. Not bad at all.

I'm really thinking about investing in some quality bound Tolkien books for my meager library.

Well, I saw it and I loved it. One warning though, if you have vertigo, don't watch it. I'll catch up on this thread tomorrow.

Saw it.

It's ok, though the expert said that there are some scenes not in the book.

The dwarfs look less realistic than in the LOTR films

Just watched it on TV finally.............. well. I decided to spare myself the last 25 minutes. I'm totally disappointed. I watched almost the whole of it just out of stubbornness, hoping it'll get better by the end.

I guess LOTR had just raised my expectations too much.

Ya totally.  I waited till 2 parts were out so I could binge watch it... guess how angry I was when I realized it was a 3 parter!  :bnghd:

Stretching the hobbit to the same length of movie as LOTR is just stooooopid.

A timely bit of thread necro as "The battle of the five armies" is out in less than two weeks.
I tend to agree with the "disappointed" feel of this thread, Saw 1 in the theater but waited for 2 to hit DVD, at this rate I'll be torrenting 3.

I'm going to see 3 but have had to think of it as a film set in middle earth rather than the hobbit - less disappointing, and there's a battle elk and troll trebuchets in this one! gotta be worth a look.

I liked 1 and 2. Something is different from LOTR but it is in the same line. It should be one movie altogether, one movie per book is rational but they would like to triple their earnings and made a trilogy out of it.

Watched the 3rd one this afternoon, in 3D.  Had a great time - really enjoyed the movie, even though it felt a long way from the book.  Enjoyed the first two, and the LOTR movies too.

I have seen the 1st in the theater... It was boooring*... Somehow one of my friends gifted me part 2 on DVD , haven't watched it yet and its not on the to do list.

*I mean seriously, the only thing that happens in that movie is that the supposedly good guys steal Smeagols only possession.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Just... for me the first Hobbit lacks... everything LOTR offers. At least it couldn't make me really feel the fellowship. It lacks .. heroes, honesty, nobility, royalty, friendship ... it's rather comic ... and LOTR was more... tragic, dramatic... Maybe it's my fault and I shouldn't have expected to see somethign LIKE LOTR. The only similar things were some characters, the.. magnificent views... and the way it started.

P.S. Yeah, I agree it was booooooooooooooooooooooooooring. Apart from a few fights, which were totally out of place and kinda very predictable, it was mostly ... walks & talks.

That's the problem.  It's not A Hobbit Story now.   It's How Gandalf Defeated the Necromancer and Thorin Vs The One Handed Goblin in Grudge Match.

Bilbo is barely a footnote in the current trilogy.

I guess we can look forward to a future "The Bilbo Bagins story - A trilogy in five parts" coming soon...

Jeez.  Can you imagine The Silmarillion as movies?  I started the book once.  Only once...

I used to have adaptation of the Hobbit by the BBC on tape, recorded by my grandfather off the radio years ago.  Maybe I need to get a copy of that and compare it to the book again.  I remember being much more emotionally involved by that than the book.

My best friend shoplifted 3 hard-backed copies of the Silmarillion back in the 80's so I felt obliged to read it as he'd gone to so much trouble to get me one (I hdidn't ask for it!) but it was like reading through the old testament! I gave up pretty quickly and just listened to Marillion instead. Much better!

I first started reading LotR in 6th grade, and found it virtually incomprehensible. Like I'd missed a big chunk of the story. In 8th grade I read Silmarillian, and it explained all the history of the world. Then, going back and rereading LotR in the 9th grade was SO much better.

In the movies, when the hobbits and Aragorn are camped out, and Aragorn's singing the Lay of Leithean (the story of Beren and Luthien) ... knowing the mirror of the story of his love for Arwen.

As for the Hobbit movies. I wasn't very happy with the first one, but the second was good. I just watched it again last night at a friend's house. Much less silliness. I'm looking forward to the third.

I settled any grudge with the movies long ago, understanding that it's like The Hobbit PLUS a bunch of other stuff. I am very much content just to see the insanely good representation of Smaug on a big screen. He's so.... BIG! :D

Extra bonus fun: While watching Desolation of Smaug last night, sine we'd all seen it, we had some running commentary/jokes going on. At one point, I asked my (other nerdy D&D playing) friend, 'Hey, wanna know how to turn a red dragon into a gold dragon?'

'Hey, wanna know how to turn a red dragon into a gold dragon?'

Does it involve stuffing a paladin with saffron and wrapping him in bacon?
