Challenge coin design submission by Microbe
on: March 23, 2014, 11:42:38 AM
As the contest is open now, I spent some time on putting my idea into an image.
This entry is for the coin version only. Fot the moment I only did one side. More to come later.
This is the very first draft, so it can and most likely will go trough slight itterations. I an thinking some icon addons. But I will stick to my design take: I wanted to step in a bit of a different design direction, and took "Challenge" to "Gamble", by giving the coin a chip design. The reverse side wil feature the value and maybe some latin / greek / rune text. what that will be: you need to wait a bit.
This is the front:

Nice.
There's nothing to stop us getting such a design made as an actual poker chip, rather than as a coin. Companies exist that make custom chips in just the same way as challenge coins. Chips would probably be quite a bit cheaper too.
If i were you, i'd find a website that does custom poker chips like: Navada Jacks (http://www.customizedpokerchips.com/customized-poker-chips/) or chiplap (http://www.chiplab.com/) and use them to help define some parameters, or even send the picture to one of them, for a quote and any advice they have on the feasibility of the design.
Pictures of most of my work can be found on my Facebook Page.
Also have a look at my Shapeways Shop and SW Torch Shop for 3D printed items.

Here is the first itterration, and the rear.

Swapped the O to a philips head O, added a plier shape to the front.
Rear is featuring a infinity sign, and spells out in latin infinitas - infinity, forever. and 2014

Interesting. It would indeed be a cheaper by far. However, these chips are plastic, and I envisioned it in metal coin form. Anyhow, it is a cool option  :tu:.

Nice. Will it be metal or plastic, like the real chips?

Thanks for your reply. I envisioned it as a metal coin that looks like a chip. It was suggested above it could be made in plastic like a real chip. That seems a cool idea to me to, but then it is no longer a coin but a chip?

In the end this is just a concept. I used black and white to show raised / lowered / treated surfaces of the coin. Maybe I should make a design to look more like metal.

Actually the proper "Casino" grade poker chips are made from ceramic, which is how they stay looking nice, with all the handling they get. This gives them a more pleasant weight than plastic ones as well.

I was going to say something about being careful with putting a value on it, but the infinitas idea works well. I was thinking along the lines of "100 internet points", but we probably want to stay away from memes if at all possible. A capital "I" might help the "Infinitas" text's legibility though.

I agree with the "2012" being better on the front.

PS. I think the white and black looks really nice.

You might try the www.MultiTool.Org curved along the southern perimeter.
And try Hex and Torx heads (OK, Robertson too) for the O, to see which looks better.
As a coin, are there nickel and bronze options? It looks great in nickel (argent, as opposed to or, according to heraldry codes).

I actually quite like the idea of a ceramic chip, they are extremely tactile and great to fiddle with. 8)

This is a really, really cool idea!

My first thought was a poker chip as well- I like how the different inflections of language are being interpreted differently by people from different places.  Here "Challenge" rarely equates to gambling, at least not until after the fact, as in "I challenge you to a duel" and then everyone else starts wagering on what the outcome will be.

Ceramic would be cool, metal would be cool, plastic would be neat too but not quite as special, but this photo:

That one made me think etched glass would be really sweet!  For some reason the recessed design made me think it could be done completely clear, with the design on both sides showing through on the opposite side as well.

Frosted glass would be really cool :)  I just don't know about how safe it would be banging around in a pocket filled with metal dangly objects.

I like the idea and the front of the coin a lot. :tu: The back ... not so sure. Maybe some imperial to metric conversions as we're from all over the world and I often have to calculate what size something people here talk about is. Or just simply the MTO motto. :D

Corning glass is actually quite tough.

Seems glass as a material is suggested a few times, so I spent some time to do a slightly transparent and glass looking version. I would have no idea if it is feasable in glass though.

Still not sure on the back side.

Well, MTO are all symmetrical words in the vertical plane, so if they were written top to bottom (vertically), that would look the same either side of the chip.

Very clever :)  And we could make it the right size to be a Slammer and we could also have Multitool.org pogs :)
