What Tools to Take on 5-day holiday?
on: August 01, 2014, 11:27:37 AM
I'm going to go on a 5-day holiday in the middle of this month and can't decide what to take with me / what combination of tools/.

It's going to be in the mountains, but should be more or less civilized, whatever civilization a 2-star hotel can offer. It's close to the city, there's a restaurant...  But who knows what we might need.

So, what are your suggestions? :D Please stick to the options in the poll, I'm not going to consider any other tools that I don't have.

You have 3 votes :D

Enjoy your holiday.  :tu:  I used all three votes but if it were me going I would probably only take two of them.

For the mountains I'd take something sturdier, like an 111 mm or a Ranger.

Out of your list I’d say Wave (OHO, decent pliers, decent locking blade), Swisschamp (for excellence in execution of all small tools) and a knife… Neither the Recruit or the Cadet are what I’d choose, but out of those I’d take the Cadet (nailfile and hardy Alox scales).

For a 5 day holiday which is "more or less civilized", in a hotel & close to a city I would say the Swiss Champ would be ideal.
I couldn't imagine a lot of use for pliers so I put the wave as a second choice as the Swiss Champ would cover you for pliers/large tweezers.

Good luck fellers, she's a stubborn one  :P I think she's STILL not got as Rambler/Manager after several attempts at encouragement  ::)

 >:D

In all seriousness, a Rambler/Manager would have been perfect here *sigh*  :P but failing that, I'd say Swisschamp and PST  :tu:

Thanks! :) I think most people have chosen what I was initially planning to take, anyway :D Seems I think the right way  :D

Worth considering  :tu:

That's also a good point, indeed. Unless the hotel roof falls and I need to fix it

I´m no friend of carrying to much around, so i voted for the Wave only.

What that can´t handle, the others will be no help, too. And ..... you are there for relaxing holidays, not to be the new hard working hotel maintanance crew, right?  :D
Have fun.

Bye,
Michael

For a five-day holiday, not far from "civilization", take:
Credit card    Cash    Girlfriend    Swimsuit    SwissChamp

I voted P.S.T and swiss a Champ. That's what I would take, or Wave and smaller Sak. Either option is more than what you'll need.

Lol, sure. I'll leave the girlfriend for someone else, though, lol :D

So far the Wave & Swisschamp are even... I was rooting for them, anyway, lol. OR... the Cadet... the SwissChamp isn't THAT comfortable for cutting food/fruit due to the thicker handle..

I voted for the Wave and Cadet combo.

If I know 2 star hotels/hostels there might be some things needing fixing around the room. So Wave would be ideal for that.

And the Cadet is a very nice pocket carry for small cuts along the way.

I just realized there's no corkscrew options in this combo. :ahhh Well, I guess you'll have to drink beer.

I´d go with the LM Wave as a Multitool due to its strong pliers. (in comparison to what you were posting) And a great tool in many ways. I took it with me as my only MT to a 2-weeks-trip to Croatia about two years ago. Performed great!

Swisschamp for the great amount of tools at a pretty "small" package. You are prepared for almost everything.

Victorinox Cadet when going out at a restaurant near the town - great urban EDC tool and nice in shorts or whatever summer cloths.

I'm with sawman on this one as I am a Gerber fan too. The swisschamp covers a lot of options and then I would go with the largest Leatherman I could get away with and carry comfortably. I know you said not to add other tools but I have to say that it always makes sense to EDC  a lighter. Just my 2 cents.

Out of those models, while it is far from my favorite, the Wave will give you everything but a corkscrew, magnifier and chisel that the Swisschamp does in slimmer package, plus the option of adding a rack of bits for more tools. Probably won't need the chisel. And there are other ways to get into a bottle of wine. But I always recommend having a red SAK on hand, for PR reasons, so the Cadet as a companion- not significantly bulkier than the Bantam and more capabilities.

3 "tools" not in order of importance for your 5 holiday.  1.Some type of Aspirin or Ibuprofen for the "morning after"  2. Sunscreen 3. Cash or CC cards

Nnnnooo! I was a LM fan. Now I became a LM & Victorinox fan.  :ahhh I don't wanna be a LM, Victorinox AND something else fan. I still need to buy some food during the month! lol

@ironraven, yyyeah, you and a few other guys already gave me the idea that... I'll hardly ever need heavy-duty pliers on holiday.... So maybe the SwissChamp and... a smaller LM or...

@Aloha, thanks! :D Haha, sunscreen I definitely need

@detron, thanks :D Yeah, the camera's going with me, definitely. Which means I have to take batteries. And a battery charger? And if I'm gonna carry that much crap anyway, I may as well take all my tools  You don't want me to get bored there, do you ... :D :D

@Chako So now I have a few things and can't choose, I don't want to put myself in your shoes when YoU are facing this dilemma :D :D :D

When I went on holiday to Majorca last month, I took a Wave and a Vic Ranger. The wave didn't leave it's pouch, but it's handy to have just in case. The Ranger got used a fair bit, mostly to open bottles of wine!

I simplify things.

If I am at work, I will have my Leatherman Knifeless Fuse and Swiss+Tech Utili-key. This is my usual EDC combo...although I will change my EDC in the summer vacation months...I don't sweat the details, I just grab one and carry it for a time.

If I am going hiking in the forest, I like to pack a Shrade Navitool plus a belt carried multi-tool that complements the Navitool.

If I am on my motorcycle, I carry the Leatherman MUT.

Take a look at the thread below, is taking them all an option?  :D

Tool Separation Anxiety Disorder

I voted for Swisschamp and Wave since I like them the most and they have most tools I like about two companies present, then I also vote for Cadet, it's small, casual and won't raise a flag anywhere.
