Bond, James Bond! Who here is a fan?
on: November 21, 2014, 08:36:50 PM
So who here is a fan of 007? I've always been a fan, but am maybe looking into reading the books, anyone done that? Only thing is the novels don't go in the same order as that movies, the first one written is casino royale, not Dr. No. I'm just not a big reader, so I was just wondering who's a reader? Besides that what's your fav part? JR

Yup, I have read several of them and they are awesome. Quite different from the movies (less over the top) and its commonly Bonds enemies that have the Gadgets!

Also he is an alcoholic, wine for lunch two bottles of champaign and some vodka in the evening :o
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

I read the books decades ago. They weren't that great.  If you're looking for a great read, a couple of recommendations:

"The Day of the Jackal", by Frederick Forsyth (the movie version was also great)

"Midnight Plus One", by Gavin Lyall

Of the movies? Depends on the mood I'm in. Connery yes,Moore no,not as such,Dalton no,and Brosnan yes. Those Daniel Craig things arn't Bond.

As to the books? I think I've read all of Flemmings originals, and they vary from ok to brilliant. Funny enough,I reckon Casino Royale to be one of the best. I've read tons of the John Gardner continuations, which are kind of ok to bloody aweful( though his Herbie Kruger books are just brilliant ).

Anything since Gardner stopped writing Bond should be avoided like the plauge!
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

+1 on Day of the Jackal, and add Dogs of War ,and the Odessa File to that!

The one actor I can't stand is George lazenby, Craig ahh, his first bond sucked, but seems to be getting better, I liked him better on tomb raider. JR

See... the Craig ones are the best to me. After the Craig 'Casino Royale', I read the book, and thought the tone of that film was closer to the original book than anything I'd ever seen in previous films.

I liked the Sean Connery films. Particularly 'From Russia With Love' and 'Thunderball'.

We're probably better off ignoring 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service'.  ::)

While I came of age in the Moore Era, they are often pretty terrible in retrospect. 'Live and Let Die' is a massive steaming pile of feces. Some are better. 'The Man With the Golden Gun', 'For Your Eyes Only'. Watchable.

I liked Dalton better than the overly campy Moore crap, but it was still not great.

I WANTED so much to love Brosnan as Bond, and there are moments where we first start to see some more serious stuff in his run. I'll sit through any of them gladly, but they still have moments of the intentional camp that straight-up pisses me off.

Craig. Win/Fail/Win. 'A Quantum of Solace' was terrible. The other two were epic awesomeness.

Skyfall Spoiler ahead
Show content
While I'm very sorry to see Dench go as M, Seeing Fiennes step into the role is awesome.

My hubby has a ton of Bond theme songs on his phone. I tend to think 'For Your Eyes Only' is the best, with 'Die Another Day' coming in second, and 'Skyfall' third. Pretty much anything by Shirley Bassey makes me want to wretch, but then I pretty much hate that entire style of music. I want to hurt someone every time i hear 'Goldfinger', and shove those muted trumpets up someone's...

Not that I have an opinion, or anything.

I have one Moore movie that is a complete guilty pleasure. The previously mentioned 'For Your Eyes Only'. Terrible movie that is SO campy, and SO much fun. it might stick with me because I think it was the first Bond film I saw in the theaters.

I pretty much enjoy all of the Bond films, but yes, some are MUCH better than others.  Brosnan was my favourite Bond, followed by Connery.

I remember the first time i saw the train fight scene in 'From Russia With Love'. It was the first 'dirty' fight I'd ever seen, and thinking that was probably WAY more like how a fight would go than most of the fight scenes in movies. It was awesome, and i was hooked.

I have read two books. Sean Connery is the best Bond. I like the Lazenby movie, he was OK and Savalas and the Alpine setting were excellent. I like the humorous Bond of Moore, although there's a ton of 80's kitch in the movies. Dalton was good. The next two are playing like Hollywood action movie heros. My favorite movie was the Canon ball remake, Never say never again.  Great supporting cast.

Me too,  I have the Bond 50 Bluray set,  and have watched all of them many times.

My personal favorite movie is Thunderball.  I have read a few of the books and enjoyed them.

If I can help, let me know

... but want to read the books, my only thing is I'm not a reader

We got 'Casino Royale' and 'Live and Let Die' as audio books from our library to listen to on a long road trip. That worked out excellently. The only problem was the accent of the reader was such that I thought 'Vesper' was 'Vespa', in the first book.

Both of those first two books were, IMO, quite good. Not exactly GREAT, but quite good.

I thought of that to, but then said to myself, I don't think I have anything around the house that plays tapes, everything's cd, but might have one in the basement. My only thing is I'd be listening with my eyes closed to picture everything and probably pass out after five min, lol.. JR

My husband works at a library system, which links about 1/3 of Illinois libraries together in a sharing program. Libraries are kind of a 'thing' in our home. They're an awesome resource. Lots of them even have e-book lending now, for Kindles and the like. Most have a lot of movies available on DV/Bluray. Lots of them have tons of Music CDs, and happy for me, lots carry graphic novels (compiled comic book arcs).

Check it out! (Pun intended).

I really like Craig's portrayal. Timothy Dalton was my favorite. He seems to be the most true to form of everybody who played Bond.
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

I might be crazy but it's kept me from going insane- Waylon Jennings
