Forced patina: Mercator K55K
on: April 07, 2015, 10:11:52 PM
My first attempt with forced patina, after cutting some apples last night the blade started develop some uneven patina. I figure might as well do it all. Dipped in hot white vinegar for 15 mins, then wash it thoroughly with tap water, then an oil bath.
The key to a even layer of patina I found is apply acid evenly, then wash it with water thoroughly before wiping it down.
I like how it comes out.

I love the lines of that knife. If they did a 3inch slippy version I'd be very tempted :)

I like that knife and I'll get one soon. Spearpoint is my preferred blade for my lifestyle, that's why I love Victorinox, Opinel Jardin and this Kat knife too.

The Garden knife is pretty close too.....

That Coghlan's camp on bottom is a standard line Opie blade shape.

Actually, the usual blade type for Opinel's is a Yatagan. They have a nº8 Jardin, with spear point and different handle shape. Love the blade, hate the handle.

I actually like the Garden knife handle better...another reason I like the Coghlans Camp Knife so much.

I wasn't aware about that, a Yatagan with Jardin handle, very neat. I still find Jardin perfect and hope I'll try the Mercator too.

I'm thinking about doing the opposite: Jardin blade with classic handle. The classic thicker "pommel" gives me more stability and I have more control with the spear point.

My EDC Opinel Jardin is SS. Would you suggest the alternative EDC Mercator in Carbon or SS too?
