Surrender, like at the Marne?  Verdun?  Austerlitz?  Marengo?

Might want to check your history a bit.  ;)  Yes, they surrendered in the Franco-Prussian War and World War II, but there's a reason that the French were once one of the most powerful nations on earth........

I know that a Douk Douk isn't French, but it was considered to be the french army knife for a good while. Mostly because their sleek profiles meant they could be carried easily and there is a protruding part which lends itself to be hammered in a makeshift lock

That's got a 5-turn corkscrew too! That's a serious wine-drinker's knife.

It really should have a hollow blade, like the Vic Cheese Knife though... (which reminds me; I need to pick up one of those, or make one out of a waiter with a dremel..)

I think we got the joke. But this is the Web and things can get out of hand pretty quickly so it's some way of doing damage control.

In reality, one of my closest friends is French and I tend to call him Froggie. For someone outside it would be some xenophobic fuel to the fire but between us, it's a joke the same way he calls me a lot of other things. Same way with just about everyone else

That knife picture has been doing the rounds in the internet for years. There I also one with white flags instead of corkscrews. More offensive.

If it wasn't for very large shipments of French muskets and a man named Lafayette, we'd still be drinking tea and under British rule.

And when we staged the largest invasion in history, the allied landing at Normandy, it was a bunch of French citizens operating at night as the resistance, that blew up railroad tracks and disrupted communications lines the night before. The resistance did a lot of very dangerous work, including smuggling downed U.S. and English pilots away from the Germans.

Yes, we got the joke, but that same lame joke has been circulating around the 'net for years, but it wan't ever funny back then.

Sorry I got back to my own thread so late.  I was unexpectedly incommunicado all yesterday.

For you French military defenders, the "We surrender" quote is from the British animated movie "Flushed Away"  (2006).  The Le Frog character is voiced by the French actor Jean Reno, so apparently he, at least, is a good sport about the whole thing.

Jean Reno is actually Spanish. He was born Juan Moreno Herrera-Jimenez, of Spanish Parents who had fled to North Africa to escape the Dictatorship of Franco. He didn't go to France until he was 17 for school, and he served in the French army to gain his citizenship.  So he's a Spanish guy who was born in Casablanca, Morocco of ex-patroit Spanish parents.

Disingenuous of you to say North Africa. He was born in Casablanca, in what was then French Morocco. It is well known he self-identifies as French and that the French public accept him as such.

I have nothing against the French per se, but even a cursory examination of history shows that their military misadventures are numerous, jerseydevil notwithstanding: Agincourt, The Seven Years War, the invasion of Russia, Waterloo, and the 1963 pullout from NATO to name a few not already mentioned.

There is a reason why their most decorated military unit is a Foreign Legion.

There is a reason why an old joke (American WW2 soldiers made this one up) says that used French military rifles are available for sale in good condition since they have never been fired and only dropped once.

The UK and US plus countless other countries are guilty of that - don't put it all on the French.

I am not French and find it very offensive. French people have a great military history (scared all Europe once) and an even greater cultural history. And they make great weapons for their size, being bold enough to resist being just a protectorate who buys tons of US or German products. I understand there is a long historical rivalry between them (who are underrepresented here) and other former or currently imperialistic nations (overrepresented) but this is because the Grand Armeé terrified their anchestors, a young virgin pushed them to the sea and an old general implied harsh conditions during a notorious treaty. But even if that wasn't so, Voltaire was French.
