Victorinox Spirit
on: November 07, 2015, 11:54:09 PM
A few questions for the knowledgeable residents of the MTO forums.

So the Spirit any good?
What's the average price for one used in fair condition?
And anything note worthy to mention about it? I know the standard blade is a serrated butter knife, but other than that?

Tales of it's shortcomings or heroics are welcome.

A guy has a pair of them locally (with sheaths) and It's giving me the old multitool itch something fierce. (there should be a creme for that)
Your opinions and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. You guys stopped me from buying a Leatherman Juice (which I feel is overpriced for what you get TBH) so your words weather encouraging or discouraging are appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

DO IT!!!!!!

It's not the best tool for everyone, but it's the best fit and finish you'll every find. Upsides are incredible tool density. Absolutley packed with function, and very well made. Downsides include slippery when wet, and can be a bit shabby with thinly stranded wire (but handles coathangers and stuff with ease)

Everything about the Spirit I love except the wood saw. That I love less ::) and I keep thinking they should have put scissors instead.

Very useful little thing overall.

It has a great tool density for a very compact package. Love that you can bear down on the plier handles as much as you can without any hot spots.

Simply put: it's one of the best. Great fit and finish, a complete set of tools, great warranty. Some of the cons are more subjective depending on your needs. No pocket clip, no oho blade, it can get slippery but from what I hear it also doesn't rust easily, and the pliers are slightly small but are extremely comfortable to use. Overall you will never know until you get it

I recently had a Victorinox Spirit, probably around four months. For me the Spirit is like a Swisschamp or Craftsman equipped with normal size pliers. Its appearance may not look tough when compared with other plier based multitool, but when I use it a few times, then I was amazed by its ability. The size is not too large, lightweight, highly ergonomic, making me regret why not buy the Spirit at the first time when I need plier based multitool.

Btw why there's no Spirit photos in this thread?

The Spirit rocks.  I have an RT, basically an X with fancy handles.  I've used it pretty hard, including as a hammer on more than one occasion. :ahhh The Spirit's F&F is top notch, but it's more than just a fancy looker.  It's one hell of a user as well. :tu:

Not the best pics but they are the actual tools being sold.

He's also got a bunch of Waves, Skeletools, Swisstool and others for like $30 a piece. Lots of SAKs as well. As he worded it "Shoe boxes full of them." Think one or both of those Spirits may be coming home with me tomorrow.

And to anyone else the more you can tell me the better. All information is appreciated and important.
Thank you...

P.S.
Stop showing pics of the black ones! Their no longer produced and freaking awesome!!!
They look like what James Bond would look like if played by Idris Elba or a young Denzel Washington.

If you don't mind can you pick me up a wave and I'll pay you for it and the shipping? $30 sounds great for one

You should take pics if everything he has, and see if anyone wants them... I myself would kill someone for a rangergrip 71 gardener at or under $30...

To the people asking this isn't that type of deal. It's me driving way out of town meeting a stranger in a populated public place due to a Craigslist posting type of deal. (that's exactly what it is) It's a I got a .380 tucked on me and he's probably got a .25 on him type of thing. (kind of reminds me of my youth...don't ask)

I will however ask if he's interested in online or mailing sales and point him in the direction of MTO if everything goes accordingly.

Again this is from a Craigslist posting these things can be...kind of flaky. It wouldn't hurt for you guys(and gals) to check locally to see if anyone is selling tools. That's what I did instead of taking the Ebay route. Glad I did...well I will as long as everything goes accordingly.

Alas.

The only thing I wish for on the Spirit is a more substantial knife. It's small. Beyond that; it's a fantastically made tool with everything you could ever want or need on it... :)

I would be jumping on the pair of them at $30 each. I got mine off E-bay and paid closer to $60 and it didn't even come with the sheath. I had to order the sheath from someone else.  If the guy does have higher end Leatherman tools at a similar price point I would buy those too.

I've always had good luck buying things off Craigslist but ymmv.

I'm strongly considering going after a Spirit. I've had nothing but Leathermans and I'm ready to try one. I was considering a Rebar but the Spirit looks like a better value for the money.

The other thing I'm considering is getting a one handed trekker and pairing with dedicated pliers.

Swisstool or Oh trekker and pliers. Which should I go for?
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

The Spirit is quite frankly the nicest MT I've ever handled. Fit and finish puts any of the Leatherman's I've handled to shame. I think I'd rather have a Wave as a beater for certain, but for an every day carry tool I'd rather have the Spirit.

It have dubbed it "Sinatra". Cause it's smooth like Franky...Also cause it's laser etched with the name Sinatra, (which I don't care for...but) this is simply the nicest tool I own and am glad of my purchase. I've always had buyers remorse with almost anything I've bought, and to be honest I don't have that feeling of dread whatsoever. In fact nothing but elation.

I'll load pics later for certain. Probably start a new topic about buyers remorse and satisfaction.

Enablers the lot of you!!! :D

not sure about the deal but as far as a Spirit goes, in 6 years it hasn't failed me once. and I did a lot of dumb redneck stuff with it and a lot of even dumber roadie stuff. still looks brand new which would lead many people to believe it was a shelf queen. in reality only implement never used was the blade

+1 My Spirit is definitely a beater, but it's still in excellent condition and I use it daily. I got an original PST (Marly) back in the 90's, never used it, a Wave in the late 90's, never used it, and a few other plier based MT's. I was used to the quality of my Deluxe Tinker and SwissChamp that I carried during those years, then later an Explorer. It took the Spirit for me to even consider a pliers based tool, but now I prefer it for heavier duty work. IMHO Vic does MT's properly, and Vic's are all I own now (2 ST's and 4 Spirits). Props to LM for the basic idea, but the Spirit is perfection.  :)

Congrats F! Hope you continue to enjoy it like most of us do.

I will admit it is sad, but around here Craigslist deals have become somewhat dangerous. People use the service to set people up for robberies, car jackings, or even murders. There's even a guy dubbed "The Craigslist killer".

That's pretty sad to hear, especially since I've had pretty good experiences as a causal Craigslist user. This service was supposed to be a benefit to everyone, but I suppose it just takes one bad egg to spoil the basket..
