Multipurpose hook test

So the Victorinox multipurpose hook (parcel carrier) is rated to bear 200lbs.  Seems like a lot of weight to be borne by that tiny pin.  I was wondering, what is the most weight anyone has put on this thing?  Has anyone here broken it or seen it break?

Yes, I saw a similar clip earlier this week, where a guy weighing 90kg pulled himself up on the hook.

It also works really well when you're in the alps being chased by baddies. You can use it to slide down the cable car line. If I had a quid for every time the hook has saved my life. Well I wouldn't be stuck here at work typing this out i can tell you.

I carried a 30 lb. square bale on my Explorer's hook once. I've done the same with another model, my Fieldmaster, I think.

Wait till you see what the guy can do with the fish scaler, Harley :rofl:

Seriously though, I'm not sure about twisting the backlayer tools, the hook in this case. It seems it can take it but I know Victorinox recommends no to do that and I've had the awl on my beater 91mm Ranger develop (just a little) side play with far less stress. I put some holes on a empty can with it to separate gravels from dirt.

Nevertheless, this video showcases that the hook isn't as useless as some people think it is :hatsoff:

So it IS strong enough for emergency zip lining then!

It would take quite alot to shear the brass pin... I would love to test one to failure to actually find out... That just made the todo list.

A twisting motion will cause failure much sooner though.  Ive seen numerous time the backside phillips has been used a stuck screw and rips the pin right through the soft Al liner.  Thats the only pin without a bushing on it.

Well, that hook keeps the awl in place when closed, so it does not sink in the handle. That's enough for me. Instead of a stump, they made t a hook. Why not?

So conversely, on your Ti mods with steel pivots; the weakest link would be the tool itself which would torque first; before the liners or pivots would even blink.

That's a great series of Victorinox videos. First time I see one. Great job Nikos Doulas!
I've seen his Facebook page. He is a climber, a mountaineer, a mountain biker, a camper and an aviator. No surprise he likes Victorinox. Only problem, he supports the wrong sports team.
