needlenose to bluntnose mod
on: July 04, 2016, 06:07:44 PM
I would prefer bluntnose pliers on my  LM Rebar.  Can this be done with a Dremel tool using a cutoff wheel?  Any suggestions appreciated.

Yep, just make sure you have plenty of water on hand to ool things off. Also, you'll want a grinding or standing bit to clean it up afterwards.

And dont forget, you can always take more off, but once you've cut it too short its too late.

thanks guys.  By the way Toolslinger, what would your long answer be?  Feel free to be blunt, in the event you would recommend against this method.

I also used a Dremel HD Cut off wheel.  Like SLMed, said have water to cool down the tool.  Also be prepared to do some sanding afterward ( at least in my case ) to clean up the nose.

I used tape to mark where I was going to cut and held the tool in a vise.   I was able to tip the tool into the cooling water as I cut.

I used a bench grinder on my ST300 (or MUT  ), and just went slow, and kept dipping it in water.  I used my angle grinder on my MUT (or ST300  ), and same thing, went slow, and dipped in water to keep it cool.

forgive my ignorance, but is it the tip of the multitool where I'm doing the cutting that needs to be cooled off, or the cutoff wheel on the Dremel tool?  thanks.

I would have gone into detailed steps like a tutorial. ;)

I don't have anything against bluntnose, I've modded a Rebar and Surge head to BN. I just have found that I regretted doing it as the pointier tips are more useful for me. Thankfully I did the mods to spare units that were purchased for parts.

You need to cool the tool. You don't want the plier head getting too hot and ruining the temper of the steel.

I used a hacksaw when I did mine. It took longer, but I had more control than with a dremel (personal experience) and I was able to stop when the steel started to heat and let it cool.
