Collaborations - Partnerships - Rebranding
on: August 11, 2016, 01:53:23 PM
I am very intrigued by all these regarding the 'major' brands, if you will, so I thought I'd make a list of these for no particular reason.
In particular, I am interested in collaborations that formed a new tool or feature, like the Vic 111mm plus scales for Garant, or the Paladin MTs.

You forgot one....

Wenger
- Victorinox

Yup, Victorinox manufactured a knife with the Wenger logo on it before the Elseners bought Wenger.

Hybrid SAK

Oh yeah, and I think Bear also licensed their design to HardHat and Craftsman.

Also, Victorinox — or the American arm "Swiss Army Brands, Inc." — and Bear, since they bought Bear Cutlery to get the patents to build the SwissTool. (That's my understanding anyway.)

Yup, I agree with that assessment. :)

There's Wenger's Porsche series.

Wenger also did special tools for Shortix and Bernina, and the G&E sight adjustment tool.

Victorinox did the Master Electrician and Master Gardener for SMKW.

Camillus Knife Co.

Sears Craftsman (I've got a stockman's knife by them, branded Craftsman)

Case (supposedly, some of their later electrician's knives were made by Case, and so were mariner's knives as well right up until Camillus went broke in '06).

Buck (their early traditional style folders were made by Camillus, and command a pretty penny on Ebay.

Klein Tools--these predate the Utica Kutmaster knives by decades.

Schrade:

Craftsman, lasted for over 30 years, knives from traditional patterns, even some Old Timers, with "Old Timer" shield and Craftsman tang stamp, or "Old Crafty" shield to modern ventures like the Cliphanger series and the Tough Tool.  A version of the Tough Tool was made for them years before it saw branding as a Schrade.

True Value--these, which resemble Old Timers, have a MM prefix stamp.  Called the Master Mechanic series.

Utica/Kutmaster

Klein Tools--both the common brown woodgrain plastic handled pocketknives and Multimaster, marketed as Klein Tripsaver, Multimaster's file with wire strippers is exclusive to Klein.

Proto Tools--they also have the plastic handled knives, but have two versions of the Trip Saver, and a commemerative small lockback, and two knives with actual wood handles and brass liners.

I've seen a hawkbill marked as "Revere" made years ago that could be Utica Kutmaster, as it looks identical.

Eggington Group:

Klein Tools--blue, and orange (older) with Klein Tools Sheffield Tang Stamps--Ibberson Action Knife rebrand.

Sandvik

Snap On (Bahco and Snap On branded all stainless lockbacks)

Mora:

Bahco 2444 Carpenter's Knife (cheapened Clipper), and possibly a wrecking knife patterned after Mora's chisel.

Case IH, it's just a plain Mora with Case imprinted on sheath.

Wenger:

Buck, we all know the SwissBucks.

Victorinox:

Hoffritz, a New York-based department store.

Case/Metal Stampings Limited
Case established a subsidiary in Nova Scotia,  Canada to produce a mariner's knife for the Canadian Navy called Metal Stampings Limited, and marked "M.S.LTD XX".   Lasted from just after WWII to either the mid '50s or mid '60s.

Special-handled items include:
- Vic Coach Leather
- Vic Urban Chameleons
- Vic Michel Jordis

I've started adding links to various collaborations. Vic and Wenger are easy, they're in the wiki.

If you have a link to a nice thread about any of the special models etc listed, feel free to add it, especially if it is in this forum. Thanks!  :tu:

Leatherman also made a special Juice, the SC2, for Sams Club, around the same time they did the Pro for Costco.

Found the Raptor post

I've recently decided to start a Raptor collection, my goal being to have one of each color. As far as I can find out, there are six versions: all black, black/orange, red, green, tan, and all orange.

I've spoken to a customer service rep at LM, amd they've informed me that the black version and tan version are available to any retailer. The black/orange version is exclusive to Cabela's, the red version is exclusive to REI, and the green version is exclusive to a wholesaler (Pacific Fly Warehouse) and as far as I can tell, is only carried by Sportsman's Warehouse. It is no longer available on their website, though some stores still have some in stock.

The Leatherman rep also tells me he vaguely recalls seeing a blue-handled Raptor once, but it was never produced. He believes it may have only been a prototype or sample.

That leave the all-orange version. I've seen it in a video, and I've seen it in a post here in this forum. The Leatherman rep says only samples were made and sent out as demo units, but there were apparently some issues and they decided not to manufacture this version. I'm not sure what the issue was; it couldn't have been with the orange plastic, since they're using it on the black/orange version for Cabela's. Regardless, since it was never a production item, they claim they have no record of how many samples were made, or where they wound up.

Anyway, the point of all this is that I am still in the hunt for an all-orange Raptor. I've sent a message to the person who posted a photo here but have not heard back. So now I'm asking everyone: If you have a Raptor with two orange handles, or know anyone who does, or even think you may know where to find one...please let me know. I would very much like to acquire one. I can offer cash, and/or a green one as partial trade. Please let me know. Thanks!
