Skeletool CX lock failure
on: August 11, 2016, 07:16:44 PM
Around six months of use and the lock on this Skeletool CX is broken. There is around three millimeters of extra play after the lockup. The blade overturns inside the handle. Will LM warranty fix this? We will see. See the lockface on the pictures.
Here is locked blade:

Here it has overturn inside the handle. Around 5-8 degrees too much:

I have to say that I'm disappointed as this tool is pretty expensive. The tool has seen A LOT of use, the blade is scratched all over, but it hasnt been abused.  Unless shelf queens, these tools will never last 25 years.

I would have expected it to last longer as well :o What kind of cutting have you been doing? Not that it makes any difference cause it still should have lasted longer  :( At least you can send it in under warranty but it still aggravating

Mine is a user, but I know I'm not using it as hard as you do.  Especially the blade. I also carry a SAK, so the Skeletool is mostly for pliers and bit driver.

LM will fix or replace.

If enough people wear them out like that and send them in,
they will redesign those parts to be sturdier.

Well 154CM scratches easily. You can always sharpen it. I think the handle should have been reinforced as it works as a stop pin for the blade.

If the frame (where the logo is printed) would be tougher, at least thicker, this problem would not occur. This material isn't enough for the blade to stop securely.

Just compare this to the pliers lockup. The pliers have three piano buttons on one and two on the other side. Blade stops only against thin, rounded up sheet of aluminium.

Anyone has this tool and how much of the blade tang of your knife actually hits this stop? Mine goes now under it.
I mean locks fail during batoning, but the blade should not overturn when slicing...

Have you tried gently hammering down the aluminum blade stop?

Here's some pictures of my Skeletool:

You can see how it's supposed to work. However, on my CX it doesn't sit as proud:

So I can see how this happened. Just looked at my Wave and it's basically the same technique for stopping the blade there, too; only that's steel instead of aluminum.
May it be as the Pattern has chosen.

No.
Looks like the basic Skeletool has better backlock.

Warranty changed the tool to new one.
This one has smaller font print on the model name.
Also the lock is better on this one.
