Attempt at restoring an unloved Super Tool
on: August 21, 2016, 01:22:11 PM

Oh, it needs more than just a clean!

- Can opener is broken
- Plain blade is broken off leaving just a stub stuck inside the handle
- Serrated blade has been ground down into a plain edge.  :ahhh
- Plier handles are very loose - should there be any springs or anything inside the handles?
- Dome on the sheath replaced with velcro (and LOTS of glue)

This poor thing has since had a soak in vinegar which didn't seem to remove much rust.
I then sprayed it with CRC and managed to free up some of the seized parts.

I managed to start dismantling it as one of the pivots was only finger-tight. Someone has messed with it - some of the pivots looked a little messed up.

Once Loki's tools arrived I finished dismantling and cleaned all the parts up, mostly with 400 grit sandpaper:

I may have lost track of the correct positions of some of the washers....

I used to love little projects like this one, you'll find quite a few on this forum if you dig back far enough!

Using increasingly finer glass / sand papers you can usually get the tools back to close to new - wet and dry paper (1200 - 1500) usually does the trick for the final "polish". Its been a while since I did one, but if I remember properly, the washers simply go between the internal tools so should be pretty straightforward.

Do you have a replacement blade for it?

Well done for saving another tool in distress
I used to come here a lot.

I recommended wired wheels or brushs to knock the rust off. The wires will get to all the peaks and valleys while the sandpaper will just glide across. Your tool will not have many scratch lines either.

I used a small toothbrush-sized wire brush to get into some of the nooks and crannies.
I used the sandpaper on a sanding block where possible to try to sand flat.
This tool has plenty of scratches from abuse so I'm not too worried about sandpaper scratches.

Looks like fun! Its nice to see where you plan on putting those parts now. Good luck

It's more likely that this tool will be the donor for yours, for reasons that shall be explained soon....

I have given everything a wipe with an oily rag and I am putting it together temporarily. A couple of the washer might be in the wrong place.

If one looks at the inside of each handle in turn (with plier end at the bottom), I have, from right to left (in the order one would put the tools on, if I have the pivots around the right way):

Handle 1: (top row of egg carton)
 *washer*
- serrated knife blade
- can opener
- phillips screwdriver
 *washer*
- small flathead screwdriver
- saw
 *washer*

Handle 2: (bottom row of egg carton)
- plain knife blade
- awl
- medium flathead screwdriver
- large flathead screwdriver
 *washer*
- file
 *washer*

Is anyone able to confirm this order is correct?

This is from trying to keep everything in order whilst dismantling it, also from looking at the washer-shaped imprint on the side of some of the tools. I think my Super Tool is missing a washer from having been dismantled sometime by a previous owner.

It makes sense that washers go next to the serrated blade, file and saw to give them clearance from other tools/handles.

Thanks Steve   Therefore I am missing a washer.
Also, for some reason one of the pliers remains loose when I tighten the pivot.

Is there anything stuck in the female side of the plier pivot maybe preventing the screw form tightening as far as it needs too ?

There didn't seem to be.

I measured the length of the pivot when it was tightened as much as I dared. Then I disassembled and just did up the two pivot pieces alone and got the same distance.

I measured the other pivot and it was ever so slightly smaller, so I swapped them over and it all works fine now. The slightly longer pivot has that little washer thing on it.

Next job is to document what needs fixing now that I can see what I'm dealing with....
