Interesting results
on: January 22, 2017, 12:57:50 AM
I have only ever sold a few things on eBay, and the last one was quite a few years ago- until now.

Yesterday I listed two Gerber MP600's and a Leatherman PST in seperate auctions.  Within a few hours of listing there were bids on the MP600's.  Minimal bids, but bids nonetheless.

Then, this morning someone bought one of the MP600's and was contemplating buying the other one.

As of now, there still have been no bids on the PST.

This is almost the exact opposite of the way things go here.  MP600's are a great tool in my opinion, but there are so many Gerber haters out there that they never seem to sell I'm the Trade Forums, and when they do its absolute low dollar, while most folks can never seem to collect enough PST's.

I'm not sure what conclusion to draw from this, but it does seem interesting.

I agree, the Gerber hate is absolutely uncalled for on their multitools. Unfortunately, their poor quality the last few years in their knife line tainted their reputation, even for their multis (which are IMO on par with leatherman QC wise)

Not a hater here ;) I carry a Gerber everyday (even if it is a Shard) I just can't get into there MTs like I do with LM

It is odd that the PST hasn't at least got an opening bid though

Maybe it has a few last minute bidders on it when it is said and done :tu:

Hope you get a premium on everything you sell Boss

So do I,  but it's not a big deal.  I don't have a lot in these ones and I have set a reserve to ensure that I make enough to cover that and costs.

I just find it fascinating that even now, there are no bids on the PST but one Gerber is sold and there are many bids on the other.

I've been watching the Trade Forums for years now and see PST''s selling quickly and MP600''s sitting there for a while and if they do sell, it's for very little.  I just wonder why there's such a huge discrepancy between eBay results and ours.

I've bought several MP600's and PowerLocks on eBay. They're great solid tools you can get at good prices, usually without too much competition.
May it be as the Pattern has chosen.

We like to talk about tools, and get enthusiastic and passionate about brands, and designs, and how they compare with the last one, or which are the rare ones and which are common, or any number of other aspects.

The ebay crowd don't necessarily want to discuss it, they just want to use it. If that's the case, an MP600 is a damn good choice of tool to just grab and go deal with life. It doesn't need discussing, it just needs to work, and the MP600 will do just that.

In the interest of fairness, there is now one bid on the PST, meeting the $.99 minimum bid.

I buy that for a dollar :salute:

Ok, cheese movie reference aside. It is interesting to hear, but then isn't the MP-600 the most sold MT? So, ultimately it might be far well known than the PST.
Probably, people buying MP-600 because a friend of theirs has one and they too want one.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Another update... both MP600's are now sold (one on eBay, one through here), and the PST still only has a $.99 bid on it.

The PST is up to a whopping $4.25, and with no Gerbers it seemed a little lonely so I just listed a couple of SOGs.

I wonder how this will go.  :D

Grant, when I went to look at the lonely PST, I couldn't find it listed; what's the link for those of us wanting to watch it? (Because like I need another one when I have a slew of them to sell, myself.)

[Edit:  Universal search for Leatherman PST and Leatherman Pocket Survival Tool have no hits for one close to that mark.]

Thanks Derek, but I wasn't trying to promote it here!  It's for sale in the For Sale thread and I'll kill the auction if any MTO members want it.  :D

I just went to look at the date codes and realized the tool I had put aside, thinking it was this PST... when in fact the tool I put aside is a PST II!   :ahhh

I guess I had better find the PST I'm trying to sell or I'm going to have to kill the auction!

Oh, and the PST II is either 0699 or 6690....  :ahhh

I'll throw out a theory! Maybe the eBay crowd represents an average sampling of the general population with a perceived value of MTs. While the MTO crowd are composed of unique, specialized, and informative individuals with a higher level of knowledge of MTs and their real value.

Or maybe another way of putting it. Marketing + Bear Grylls = Popularity

😀😀😀
