Bushcraft neck kit
« on: February 07, 2009, 01:24:32 PM »
Dudes and dudesses,

Just though I would share with you my "Bushcraft Neck kit".

This goes with me whenever I hit the trails.  Some of it is home made, some home made by me....all of it is unique "one off" stuff that I believe would help when it needed to.

It is basically a decent neck knife (with neck carry sheath), an Antler horn whistle (no metal....its that cold it would freeze to my lips, not a problem with horn) and a horn handled fire rod.

All I need to add to it now is a light and maybe a filter straw.

Any comments/improvements are as always welcomed.

Watch your six.

Very nice mate, have you thought about adding a small compass?  Can I ask who made the knife?

As for the knife....I can not remember (may get back to you)

As for the compass...yeah I like the idea, but I always use nature (sun, moss growth, stars etc) to find my way.  I always try to travel light (normally I fail at this  :-[) hence I have dropped the compass idea.

However saying that I will probably add one  :D

Very very nice setup my man :tu: I love the look ofthe firesteel and knife, not to mention the whistle.  Fantastic little setup there.  I personally don't really like to use neck carry stuff, but I can see how useful it would be to have all of that right there!

I like your kit , shows a lot of respect for traditions . If it were me I would do a few things differently . I would go with a Fox 40 or similar whistle , if you need to signal you need lots of racket . I would deffinatly go with a small compass of some kind , either on of the little zipper pull type or something more substantial , like a Silva Huntsman . If you want to go with a more traditional compass , TAD gear and others have Nato spec renditions of the little brass SAS E&E compass . I might be tempted to base my system around a Farmer or a Folder .

Your rig would look at home around the neck of a Viking or other traditional hunter .

I enclose a pic of a system I use in the bush ,

Chris

It will get ya home . I wear it under a shirt so no snagging . You are very unlikley to forget anything as the neck is very sensitive to weight changes . The Yucky green is good in that you cant miss it in leaf litter !

Inspired by Flash , I have been playing with a Farmer based neck kit . The lite is an ARC AAA-P , bout as reliable as they come , tho not as bright as newer kit . I use Lithium AAA's in it so shelf life shouldn't be a problem . I put a bunch of stainless nano clips on the lanyard to attach other items ,requirements change according to conditions . Ratherthan knotting the paracord , I elected to use a cord lock , to allow length adjustment , and prevent garroting .

I would rate the farmer superior to a small F/B , due to the saw . especially if you needed a ridge pole for a basic shelter . It would also offer advantages if you had problems with mechanical devices , or obstreperous tins !
