Could you not use that argument for a lot of that kit

eg the tissues, the lighter, the notebook, the plasters etc

It's useful for travel: Sterilizing water before shaving, brushing teeth, or at restaurants (if the bottled water doesn't seem "quite" sealed).*

* I don't suppose that's too much of an issue with EU travel, but perhaps to Eastern Europe...

Could you not use that argument for a lot of that kit

eg the tissues, the lighter, the notebook, the plasters etc

Well no not really. If I have snot coming out of my nose, I'll need a tissue there and then. If I have blood pissing out of my arm, I'll need a plaster there and then. If I get a phonecall and told a number, I'll need a pen and paper there and then.

If I am getting thirsty, then a trip to the shop is needed.

The way I see it, my kit has essentials and things to make life more convenient. It isn't a BOB or anything to keep me alive if stranded. Things like that are just a waste IMO as if I were ever to be stranded, a 2 minute walk will bring me to a house where I could call someone to come get me.

In that case......how about a bottle of water?

Seriously, imagine something in the eye that needs flushing out.....bottle of water to the rescue

A burn injury that needs a cold compress.....bottle of water to the rescue

Small fire gets out of control or jet boil "incident".....bottle of water to the rescue

(think outside the box)

The list goes on.......embrace the bottle of water.

To hydrate is goooooooooood

A lot of my technical outer gear come with Snot wipes (gloves, softshells, etc). It gets to be a habit, which can be embarassing at professional meetings.

I'd reccomend a small radio. With a shortwave option prefferalby.

Aside from that you're pretty well set. Maybe another form or two of fire starting gear (all I saw was the lighter), some energy bars, and rope as someone mentioned. Oh and a "packable" prybar.

He could always just toss in some steel wool. If he's in a car, shorting the steel wool across the battery terminals makes an awesome fire starter.

I have a ferro rod in there near the otterbox and there is a prybar on my keys (a mini Atwood one).

As it stands right now, I am a bit confused with a few items. It is not a BOB... got it. It is a car based EDC, yes? And you need never be more than 2 minutes walk from a phone.. and for water or food, you just pop into the nearest shop, right?

I would say that a set of basic but proper automotive tools would be more useful than the shovel. Perhaps a charger of some sort as well. Some spare fuses.

Also, a towel comes in handy. As would a blanket or two. And I agree that a jug of water makes sense for a car, and not for mere personal thirst.

But I may be unclear on the intention of this kit. It looks to me like the beginnings of a BOB by someone who does not want to admit to building a BOB.

krazy glue (super glue... cyanoacrylate types)

Many things can be fixed with these. Especially in a car. Rattly bits... popped off knobs.. broken whatsit.. loose something or other, etc.

And maybe you could carry one of these instead of the very BOB oriented SAS manual:

It is far from a BOB IMO. There is very little survival stuff in there.

The Jetboil is just a luxary item when out with the wife and kids on walks etc to make tea etc. It would live in my car permenantly as I have no reason to carry it around, but due to the lovely area I live in I keep nothing at all in my car.

I disagree about the shovel as that has seen use on a few occasions now. Apart from when we had snow and had to dig myself out and someone at work, I also work in the middle of nowhere and have to drive down narrow country lanes to get there. A shovel can be handy in these situations as well. It also has a large saw in the handle which can be handy to clear fallen branches which happens frequently on my work route.

An automotive tool kit is overkill for me as TBH if I can't repair what I need to with a set of Mole grips, my MT and the cars wheel brace then I wouldn't be able to do it anyway. Again, if I get any serious car problems I would just call for car recovery who would be there pretty soon.

As for the manual, that is mainly there to read when I am waiting for the wife to come out of the shops etc, but does have a lot of useful everyday info in there too.
