DVD Recorder help
on: June 06, 2009, 12:05:36 AM
I went to record Formula 1 practice this morning and my Magnavox DVD recorder went kaput. The disk tray closed with the disk and it started to read it and then it just shut off. It won't turn on at all now. I checked online and this seems to be a common problem with this model. Something inside on on of the boards burns out.  No way to fix it and from the reviews I have read Magnovox had really poor customer service. This is the second DVD recorder that I have had fail. The other one was a really cheapo model. I'm thinking of just going old school and getting a VCR. Really the only thing I record is F1 has it's on at really strange times here. What do you guys use and have you had any problems?

uh... harddisc recorder > dvd recorder
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

I had a  DGETEC 160GB DVD recorder + digital TV tuner. It was $200 cheaper than the name brands  & had a 2yr warranty. Out of the box it was terrible  ::) I did some research & found you needed to update the units firmware to get it reliable. I did that (downloaded file put it on a DVD & loaded it onto the player :ahhh). It worked really well for 18months but started to have some little issues so I thought I would get the unit fixed before the 2yr warranty expired . Contacted DGETEC they said they would fix it ...... 6weeks latter they send me a replacement unit that is worse than the one I sent them(totally unusable even after I updated the Firmware). I contact them & say I want a $ refund they say NO as DGTEC has gone bust & been bought out recently. The new owners are honoring the previous business's warranties but not giving $ refunds >:(. They did send a dual HD digital tuner PVR 160gb. It was very temperamental till I reformatted the hard drive  :ahhh, it is running great now  :D :D.I do miss the option of putting things on too DVD though(the PVR has no output ability :()

I believe this month all broadcast TV signals switched to digital. They have been running tons of commercials about getting converter boxes.

I really don't want to spend a ton of money on a hard disk recorder. Like I said I really only use it to record F1 because it's on either really early in the morning or really late at night here. And I can't catch it all the time live. That's all I used the Magnavox one for and it didn't last one season. I really just want a reliable recording device that I don't have to break the bank for.
