Heh.

Computer software comes out three times faster that I update my hardware, so I tend to miss a few operating systems (and primary software, such as web browsers, word processors, mail programs, what have you) every cycle.

Call me in 2010 and I'll let you know if I'm ready for my half-decade upgrade.

I still live in the nineties, Half my games are on floppy disks (8"! or 3 1/2" when it's cold) that new computers don't even have drives for!

(I'm not actually so old as to have a great deal of 8" stuff)

I run Ubuntu 9.04 and until recently the wife was running win2k, since I got a new machine (which came with Vista, but now dualboots Ubuntu/Vista - in that order, I boot to vista maybe once a month) her machine has become an XP pro machine, she has to run windows for the broadcast software we use. I have a computer hooked up to the tv that came with XP home, and it's still got xp on it as Mediaportal only works in windows and ubuntu is hard to setup with the ATI graphics card via a CRT TV...

I ran Ubuntu 8.04, 8.10 on my old machine happily.

I do use virtualbox with an XP setup for some of my graphics work inside linux. I also have setup a virtual machine for Win7beta, which is now running rc1. Win7 (what little I've used of it) doesn't seem so bad, at least I seem to hate it less than Vista.

I ran Filezilla (ftp) Thunderbird (email) Firefox (browser) pidgin (IM client) Open Office (office suite) all on my old setup before switching to linux/ubuntu, and now use the same software in linux... and more. The wife uses Thunderbird and Firefox in her XP install...

World of Warcraft runs just fine with wine under linux. I do play a lot less games these days, or maybe it's just I've stopped playing lots of different games and sticking to just WoW...

I would happily ditch all the windows installs in the house, but I still need a few of them around for testing websites since Microsoft seem incapable of producing a browser that sticks to standards, that or it breaks differently with each generation of browser... (thank god some clever chap came up with multi-IE)

I like XP.  I bought a laptop that came with Vista.  I honestly tried to like it. It's buggy as hell and a huge freakin' resource hog.  I could not get it to play nicely with the home network and "downgraded" to XP.  Runs great now.

My wife needed a new computer (don't ask... :ahhh) and went with a Mac.  It seems to be very stable and plays very nicely with the network.

Win7?  Not likely.  I'm holding out until Microsoft stops supporting XP.  Then, who knows?  Heck, I finally upgraded my work computer from Win98SE last fall, cuz there aren't any USB drivers for it anymore.

I've got Windows 7 on a new hard drive; I normally dual boot ubuntu/vista but I'm definitely upgrading vista to W7 when it's properly released.  The changes to the UI are nice, functional and sensible with some decent touches here and there, but more importantly it's fast, very fast.  It boots up quicker than Ubuntu, it's more responsive than Ubuntu and is as stable as good old XP sp2.  It still doesn't look as good as Ubuntu (gotta love the cube) but the compatibility of windows is essential in my main OS and i can see myself using W7 happily, I've barely booted into vista since i got the 7 beta.

not for all the "T" in hooters! I'll stick with Ubuntu. I also have a dual boot with XP
but only use it like once a season, Linux all the way for me now.

anyone trying the beta? whaddaya think?

I don't have a spare computer with the power to run Windows 7.  That said, I'm kind of waiting to upgrade to a better system until it comes out.

according to ms:
Quote
These are the Microsoft minimum hardware recommendations for systems that will be running the RC. These recommendations are specific to this release and are subject to change.

Windows 7 RC system requirements:
    *      1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
    *      1 GB RAM (32-bit) / 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
    *      16 GB available disk space (32-bit) / 20 GB (64-bit)
    *      DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Note: Some product features of Windows 7, such as the ability to watch and record live TV or navigation through the use of "touch," may require advanced or additional hardware.

that doesn't seem to steep to me... I have some really old hardware somewhere (p3-1ghz) that could probably run that.
