To iPhone or not???
on: April 06, 2009, 09:46:12 AM
Dudes and dudesses,

Your help please.....I am seriously thinking of getting an iPhone.

What do you reckon to them????

I am after a phone with loads of music, video playback, GPS/SatNav, internet, google earth, youtube.......being unable to forward photos is no big deal to me, but are there any other viables out there with such a range of after market applications?

Your help is as ever appreciated.

Nick

I have a Nokia N95 and I love it. For me the IPhone was to big (still is) and it was missing some features I wanted when it came on the market. If I where to buy a new phone today it would stand between these phones.

HTC Touch Pro

Specification for the Touch Pro:
http://www.htc.com/www/product/touchpro/specification.html

HTC Touch HD and the one most similar to IPhone

Specification for the Touch HD:
http://www.htc.com/www/product/touchhd/specification.html

Or a Sony Ericsson Xperia X1

Specifications for the Xperia X1:
http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/products/mobilephones/specifications/x1?lc=en&cc=gb

These are all running Windows mobile on them so there is a wide selection when it comes to after market application.

But if you want a IPhone then you should get a IPhone.

MEdic,

Thanks for the reply....I appreciate the work you have done.

Only problem is some of these are not easily available in England on a decent tariff.

Stuff to ponder on, thanks.

I Didn’t know that, sorry. I don’t like the IPhone and Apple, but everyone I know that have a IPhone love it. There is also coming out an OS update soon and then you can forward photos.

there are more and more iclones on the market as each manufacturer tries to get into the market... some are good, some are not...

I'd think the iphone is probably good, but I'd like something a little more open that uses opensource software too, so that I can either create or install what I want and not have to pay apple taxes
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

Right now it's a two horse race , Blackberry and I phone . If you don't have compelling reasons to go Blackberry , you will love the I phone .It comes with a lot of good stuff on it , and apps are cheap or free  . While stipulating their many virtues , I'm not a Blackberry fan . Everything other than those two lines are also rans !

I love my iPhone, it's a great device.  It's very stable and there are tons of apps available for it.

It doesn't have as many features as other cell phones but what it does it does very well.  It's web browsing experience is unmatched on any small portable device in my opinion.

I actually have 2, one as my phone and the other I have jailbroken(cracked) and I use it as a game machine and a remote for my Mac to control the music in the house.

:)

I've got an HTC 8925 and love it.  Loads of apps and mine has been super stable.  Almost two years with it and I think it's only had to be reset twice.

Well... if you are thinking of the iPhone, I'd wait til July/August as the iPhone 3.0 is going to be released then. It's gonna have wireless N among other new features... I can't wait for my Telco to switch to GSM, another couple years, but it'll be worth the wait.

I myself am looking forward to the Palm Pre. Pretty sweet looking device from what I've seen of it.

well if you can wait for the new iphone (gen3) i'd wait for it plus 2-3 months to get the bugs worked out, or just get the iphone (gen 2) with the 3.0 firmware upgrade.  mms and copy and paste is finally being supported!!!

i'm stuck with vzw state side.  att's coverage where i live sucks, seriouly sucks

Medic,

How reliable has the HTC Touch Pro been?  My carrier offers it, and I might consider the upgrade.

A cheaper alternative is the XDA Zest (made by Asus) on O2.  No its not as swish as an iphone and the user interface certainly isn't as nice but it does have gps, high speed data, 3MP camera.  Best bit though is the price.  Mine was free with contract.  Contract costs me £15 a month and that's 100 mins and all I can eat net access.  If the network coverage is OK for 3 in your area I noticed they were doing a really nice deal on the Nokia E71, now that is a nice phone IMO.

I have no idea how the Touch Pro is when using it over time, just handled it in the store a couple of times. I have read a lot of reviews for this phone and the only negative thing they say is that the touch-responsive interface, TouchFLO will lag a bit when lots of stuff is going on in the background. Exept from that they say it’s one hell of a phone. In most of the test I have seen (what can beat IPhone test’s) the Touch Pro is either the winner or is a close second place behind the Sony Ericsson Experia X1

2 of my friends have the touch cruise (had it for 2 years now) and they haven’t had any problems with them and is super happy. For me it looks like HTC makes reliable phones.

What are you looking for in a phone Flash? What are you going to use it mainly for? What feature is the most important for you in a phone and are you going to use the feature often? What is it that makes you want a Iphone? Are you planning for the phone to replace f.eks a GPS and is the GPS as good as a standalone GPS?

A very good friend of mine bombarded me with questions like this when I was considering buying a 600£ Nokia N95.

I iPhone has it's place, but it is a high-maintenance little smurf, and unless you're the kinda person who likes to spend an hour a week just keeping the status quo (think of it like sharpening your knives) then it'll get on your nerves quick enough.

I've got three phones, a laptop & two desktop computers, so running tech smurf is part of my day, but those who like to just grab the thing off the table and have it do everything it says on the box will be disappointed

What do you reckon to them????/quote]

I've only played with an iPhone once and then an iPod Touch later, so I'm no expert.  However, aside from the initial "oooh shiny!" when the iPhone was released, I've never been a fan of how locked down it is: you can only add music through iTunes, you can't get to it like a drive to pull off files, you can't expand the memory with an SD card, and you can't even replace the battery.  It's a cute toy, but I wouldn't want one.

One thing about the iPhone is that it's very easy to browse and post to multitool.org from an iPhone.  I am posting right now from an iPhone.

2 of my friends have the touch cruise (had it for 2 years now) and they haven’t had any problems with them and is super happy. For me it looks like HTC makes reliable phones.

I can vouch for HTC phones, i've had the HTC TyTn II for over a year now and it's a beast of a phone.  It's on the large size, something which the Touch Pro looks to have fixed but as far as features go it's just unrivalled and knocks the iPhone for 6.  Windows mobile is a surprisingly nice system to use, especially with the HTC touchflo features, although it can get a bit slow at times when you're doing major multi tasking.  The software support is insane though, it's essentially a mini laptop which can make phonecalls, take pictures, use gps and connect to HSPDA wireless internet; it will take a bit of fiddling until you are used to it and can get everything working as you like but unlike the iPhone there is a lot of software  already there and in lots of cases it is free.

Google phones might be worth looking at as well, they will be aimed at the same market as the iPhone but imho once the android software takes off the open source framework will be much better than being tied in to paying apple for every little thing you do.  That's the problem with iPhones for me, they do some things fantastically but not only do they lack a hell of a lot of high end features despite the premium price, but you will also then have to pay through the life of the phone whenever you want to add something which would be free on any other platform (whether it's symbian, windows, google or just a flash based applet).

I use an iPhone 3G and LOVE it. Stable, reliable, best music player on any phone, calender is ok, it syncs to my Macs (and PC too, but poor phone :D) and it includes a SAK - a SAK styled app that has some nice features. LOVE my phone and there is hardly anything you can not find on the appstore.

If only the would allow Apple to sell videos on the Austrian iTunes store, than it would be perfect!

I love to see all those touchscreen phone owners in the winter. Tried any of those screens yet with gloves? I had a iphone for a day or two, a loaner to try it out. I was thinking of getting one but that screen, really sucks. And it is heavy, like having a SURGE in your pocket! Battery live is bad, but perhaps that was just the one I had. Called for about an hour and the battery is emty, that's not normal I guess.

But it looks very nice, and in the city it will be alright I guess but when you are a lot outside, this is not what you want, at least that's what I think. I did not get around to do the riding-a-bike-and-phone-falls-out-of-your-pocket-test or the it-is-really-raining-and-I'm-outside-and-calling-test, but I wonder how that works out.

BTW, does anybody knows why all electronic stuff is getting smaller and lighter but cell phones not? I'm thinking to get a new phone but I want it to be small and light, at least smaller than the Samsung D-900 I have now.

Rain is not a big deal. Dropped it in the snow in winter, and found it about 30 min later again - luckily I dropped t when I was leaving my car, so it was right next to it where I searched - would have lost it otherwise.. iPhone was wet, but working without problem.
Ok, no deep snow and I had a protector hardcase attached to the backside of the phone, but still impressive.

I now carry my phone in a Crumpler Culchie - it´s pretty save there I guess.
