Custom hack saw blade for powerlock
on: January 24, 2009, 04:53:55 AM
Just finished my prototype custom hack saw.  Works pretty good, but I may make another one out of a higher quality blade (anyone know a good brand?).  I notched lock-tabs on the end using the file as a stencil.  The hack saw locks, but is a little flimsy due to the thinness of the saw.  It works well, but obviously such a short saw is not very efficient, although much better than nothing.

Now that's an excellent idea! It must take up the same amount of  room as a washer, huh? LOL

Wow great idea Resaw, I gotta make one too.
The file works great as a metal saw but it would be great to have the option of a thinner saw to get through material quicker.
Thanks for sharing.

Just saw the post, looks GREAT. It's 11PM and I'm on my way out to the shop to make one, I also have a Rescue blade for my reciprocating saw I may try to fit into my PPP. THANX
Why do I carry a 45 ?
Because they don't make a 46 !

Great topic and great pics!  Just earlier tonight, I was wondering how hard it would be to make my own powerlock components.  I was thinking about making a longer blade because the standard blades seem a bit short.

Yes, PL blades should be longer.  I made the hack saw as long as possible.  I think the SOG blades are short so they fit both the PPP and the PL.

Thanks guys, glad to see I have inspired.  Just keep it legal when it comes to using a hack saw!

Great idea resaw!  :salute:

I see what you mean about the thin blade being flimsy though. I wonder if it would work better to place the pivot at the opposite end, so the blade cuts on the return stroke?

I'm going to dig around and see if I can find a suitable saw blade for this mod...looks cool. :tu:

I might try "flipping" the blade around so the teeth are facing up at you when it's folded in the handle.  When the blade is deployed, it will be positioned a little better for sawing seeing as there won't be another handle under it..it would be positioned like a saw or file on a Wave.

And Resaw, take a pic of the whole tool if you get a chance, it looks pretty well used!

I think it'll put too much stress on the lock that way.

Exactly, too much stress. I don't trust the lock on the closing cycle, but it is deffinetly positive the on the opening.  There may be a way though.  More material left on the end may help, but I just copied the shape of the file.  There could be some fooling around in this.  I'll try again when I get a better blade.  That one is just a Canadian Tire saw.

Corrugated: it is well used, but mostly just dirty.  Nothing broken or bent yet, so that's good.  I work my tools pretty hard.

J-sews:  It is cutting on the return stroke.

Nice :) I assume you drilled the hole to the right size? Reciprocating saw blades have a hole on the end, but I think it'd be too small. Sorry for resurrecting the thread, but I'm considering the same sort of thing for my PPP.

Nice one mate  :salute: I am planning to try & do something similar with my LM Micra's getting rid of the useless tweezers & subbing them for a modded small saw.
