Nitecore EX10 & D10 questions.
on: October 28, 2008, 07:07:36 PM
I am still really keen on getting one of these, but I have a couple of questions.

Firstly, what do you recommend, the OSRAM or the Cree Q5?

And, do they have a strobe function?

Many thanks

Ben

The best way to describe the EX10 and D10 UI is "a single mode, adjustable brightness" light.

In other words, no SOS or strobe modes, just one mode on-off.  But, that one mode has adjustable output.

There are four ways to adjust the output when the light is on.

  • Hold down the button to ramp the output up, release at desired brightness
  • Hold down the button again to ramp the output down, release at desired brightness
  • Double-click the button to shortcut to lowest output
  • Click-press the button to shortcut to highest output

The light will always remember the level it is set at when you turn the light off, and will always come back on at that level.

The light can also be used as momentary (light comes on only as long as the button is pressed).  This is accomplished by loosening the head until it turns off.  At that point, momentary illumination is available.  Tighten the head back down until the light comes back on, and you're back to on-off operation.

I still need to make a video about this, because writing it down in text makes it seem like a complex UI, when actually it is very simple in operation.  I carry a D10 every day, and I find it to be the best all-around UI for an EDC light.  The Novatac EDC-120P comes in a close second, but it is a bit more complex with many more options.

Thanks for that Terry.  I like the fact there are no strobe or SOS functions.

Any thoughts on the Cree or OSRAM LED's?

The OSRAM GD+ has the cleanest beam, so I personally would opt for that one.  The Q5 and the GD+ basically have the same output and efficiency.

In case you didn't know, 4Sevens just got a shipment of the new pocket clips in for the D10.  Mine was just shipped out today.

I almost bought the OSRAM when it first came out, but the color tint turned out to be quite blue, not sure if it's the same now. Also even thou the manufacturer claim they are the same efficiency, someone posted the spec of both and OSRAM appears to be lower than CREE.

Just found this BTW;

I am actually (unpopularly) leaning more towards the EX10 ATM, as I prefer a stubbier light and everything else I EDC takes CR123's. I am also thinking about going rechargable.

I can't go to youtube at work.  Is that the instructional video that 4Sevens put together?  It actually explains the UI fairly well, but the instructions could have been simplified a bit.

It is yes.  All seems pretty straight forward.

I saw that, but the difference is very small.  I doubt you'll miss the extra couple of minutes of runtime.  ::)

Reports I've seen are that the tints have improved.  However, I'm not going to sell my Q5 to get a GD+.

I just ordered a EX10 as well as an Extreme ( both Q5's) from   4-Sevens
Why do I carry a 45 ?
Because they don't make a 46 !

I got myself an extreme R2 a few months back.  Very nice little torch.  I like the way you can set one of the output levels.
Its a bit big for a single Cr123 torch, but its worth it.

Hope you like your new torches :)
