Stick PST handle
on: May 25, 2009, 02:29:47 AM
My PST has a handle that, once you fully open it, takes a heck of a lot of pressure (and uncomfortably tricky hand positioning) to close.  The handle gets stuck open.  Everything else is fine.  There's a little bit of rush on the pliers, but nothing that impedes usage.  It's just the handle.

This afternoon I tried spraying Liquid Wrench on it.  Almost seemed worse.  I wiped as much of that off as I could, then I applied oil.  A bit better, but still sticky as all get out.  Is there some other way to loosen up a tight handle on a riveted PST that I'm missing?

I've no plans to EDC this, so it doesn't need to be perfect.  I just want to take proper care of my tools.  Thanks!  :salute:

Just a thought but possibly since it's riveted it may have been like that since it was made and probably won't get a whole lot better :-\ But since I don't have 1 someone else who knows more will probably be along any minute ;) :D

If it is gunked up then you might want to try hot water and washing-up liquid.  Get it in there and work it around a lot.  Dry it off as much as possible and then add your lubricant of choice.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

I rinsed and then let the PST soak in hot water for a few minutes.  Then I dried it off with a hair dryer.  Now I've got it the sticky hinge soaking in a couple of fingers of Listerine, which is the most alcohol-like substance I could lay my hands on.  I'll check back with it in an hour or two and see if it's helped.

If all else fails, I recommend using a dry film lubricant like Liquid Wrench Dry Film Lubricant or Tuf Glide. That cuts friction..

Well the water and Listerine helped, but I think Poncho65 may have been on to something about the tight rivets.

My riveted PST is tight to open as well, but only really at the end (if that makes any sense ).

My riveted PST's handle with the lanyard ring attached to it quite a bit tighter too open, compared to the other side , especially in the last 1/3 of the opening process (I think like Ben's).

That explained it better than me - thanks.

It's the lanyard handle, so...yeah.  Looks like it's not just mine.  Thanks, guys.
