So we have a few Maglite 3C and 2AA flashlights which I'm going to convert to LED.  Looks like 140 lumens is the max for them.

I'm looking for a higher output RELIABLE flashlight for my wife.  Her flashlights life tough lives and have to be stone reliable.  I'm a little leary of CR123 lights with multiple cells, because I KNOW cells will be mixed wrt brands and state of charge.  Needless to say, if it asploded into flames, she wouldn't be happy.

What are reasonable choices currently? (get it? CURRENTly).

I'm thinking of just the 2AA MagLED and possibly getting a 4D MagLED with the 500 lumen tri-LED.

How high and how much? Anytime you go tri LED it's not going to be cheap.

Well, if I convert a 4 cell Mag with a TerraLux, it'll be about $70.  But I don't think I want to spend that much to go from 140 lumen to 210 lumen.  The tri-LED is like 500 lumen

Get a Lumapower D-Mini Digital Q5. Just ONE Cr123a cell, small, lightweight, large reflector for throw, simple 3 modes UI without useless strobe modes and very reliable. Use mine for 19 months now, never failed me. 175 Lumens I think. Adaptor for 1 18650 Rechargable available, better runtime then.

Or, get a larger Lumapower, put 18650 in, and enjoy.

That light has many fans over on CPF who favor it as a big "bang for the buck" light that is locally available.  Lots of output, decent throw and runtime for its price.

TF2C used to cost $30, but my local Lowes has had them available for $25 for months now.  I nearly grabbed one the last time I was at Lowes, but got a second MiniMag Rebel LED instead.

Are there Lowes stores in the UK now?

No Lowes stores in the UK that I know about but Tesco have taken these on and sell them under their own brand I have several 2aa a couple of the 2c and 1 2d that lives in my car
I am something of a fan as I have a habit of dropping /losing torches and won't cry if these go astray

Is that what the Tesco's lights are?  I've got one of the 2C ones as well and it is an impressive torch.  Lots of throw with little spill.  Superb torch for the money.

The 2AA has a lot more useable spill and still decent throw and given that it's cheaper than an incan minimag it is great vfm.The 2D is good allrounder easily matches the 2C for throw and gives a lot more spill and given that I am a clumsy ape I can guarantee that it's robust :D
