springy pliers
on: May 30, 2009, 10:45:23 PM
Can you guys recommend some springy pliers.  I've been using my skeletool cx to seal cord work with the horizontal knurling on the pliers.  It's been a bit annoying that I have to get the cordage molten with a lighter (two hands needed) and then pick up my skeletool and get them open.  I'm looking for something with some sort of spring mechanism like the squirt p4, but at a lower price range.  If costco ever starts selling the squirt two-pack again I will definitely shell out, but I'm not buying a p4 for $30-40 just for this.

Bahco market a sprung MT loosely based on the Bear Jaws. The quality isn't bad.

I totally agree with you there - sprung jaws would be very useful.

I always use dedicated pliers for stuff like jewellery making where it would be next to impossible without them.

The pliers on the Wenger NewRangers are springy.
Models with pliers are: Alinghi 176 and 177, NewRanger 70,73,74,75, and Touring 174.

Gerber makes springy pliers as well.  For small work, a Clutch is pretty good (and inexpensive).

I'd stick with your first instinct and go for the Leatherman P4. None of the other small plier tools are as well made.
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

Or maybe some SAK pliers would suffice? I actually use a Gerber Clutch myself for paracord stuff, as I'd rather muck that up than a P4!

I used to come here a lot.

Hmm, I'd disagree when it comes to dedicated sprung pliers (not MTs). There's quality products out there.

How about the zillatool? It's pretty inexpensive and the pliers are springy. I have stopped using my Jr though, because the blade deployed in my pocket unintentionally. Could never bring myself to EDC it after that.

I wish leatherman made springy pliers. I know a guy who put away a wave for the suspension because of the pliers
