Anyone know about this tool?
on: May 31, 2009, 01:35:12 AM
I have had this Carolina tool for a very long time. I don't remember where or when I bought it, but it was quite a few years ago.

I have always wondered if this is a Gerber in disguise made for another, or the mechanism was licensed out. Am I right in assuming that Gerber is the only one with the sliding pliers head mechanism?

Any answers/speculation/whatever would be heartily welcome.

The tools don't lock on the Carolina.

Gerber Flick, Gerber MP400, and Carolina.

The Carolina Knife & Tool line definitely has Gerber roots.

My theory is that about ten years ago, when all the Gerber multitools were still made in USA, they decided to set up some production in China. Rather than start their Chinese affiliate out making "Gerber" branded tools, they marketed them under the CK&T brand. Eventually manufacturing quality improved to the point that there no longer needed to be two seperate brand names. The same Chinese factory now produces Fliks and Freehands, etc.

....keep in mind this is just a theory of mine, based on no facts... :-\

Sounds viable though Bob. It looks a bit like the old multiplier to me.

What's the quality of it like Chako? Solid enough?
I used to come here a lot.

Caroline tool in Canada is imported by Fiskars, so definatley has ties with gerber. The name brand is alive and well here.

Surprisingly solid enough. The pliers have a nice smooth action. Once in its place, very solid. Only major issue with the design...the folding tools don't lock. Probably a sign of its age more than anything.

Looks like yours has a different tool set J-sews.

Ok, I didn't know the connection to Fiskars. That makes perfect sense.

Thank you.

Well.....to be honest I have a bit of trouble opening and closing it. :-\ The individual parts are well made, but the overall design is a bit clumsy in my hands. :-\

Of course, that may be due to my big fumbly fingers. :P :D
