Iphone apps
on: June 06, 2009, 10:04:55 PM
Dudes and dudesses,

OK, I pulled the trigger and got an Iphone....just waiting for it to arrive.

Now I need help.  What apps are best for a dude that loves the outdoors....so far I have:

Anti mosquito
Outdoor military manual
Compass
Google earth
First aid
Tracker
Shakespeare (something to read at least )

Any other suggestions (apart from games etc to keep me entertained.) for the outdoor enthusiast

Many thanks in advance,

Nick

There's one called "What's around me?" or something like that. You can find out where the nearest chemist, hospital, pub, cafe etc are. I know it's not strictly survivally and outdoorsy but it's brilliant when you're somewhere unfamiliar and need....well I was going to say medical care but to be fair we've only used it to find restaurants when working away  :D

I'll have a look next time I'm at work - my colleague has one fully loaded with apps.

You going to review it when you get it then....so I can decide whether to succumb or not

Never mind, I ended up buying the Army Survival Guide..the 18 MB one! I was going to buy the pocket reference survival guide but I looked at the size and it was only 2.1 MB!  :o

A few other useful apps I have include: the 9-1 Army Knife, Converter, Knot Guide, Pocket Aid, Ruler, PI83 Graphing Calculator, and UnBlockMe (best puzzle game ever!)

Apps I can recommend, not necessarily outdoor related:

Free

Apple remote - iTunes control app.
VNC lite - remote mac/PC control app.
AWG convert - neat app to determine wire guage.
Multiconvert - my favorite converter app.
Reqall - talk to it and it transcribes to text and emails you the text and original voice recording, great for recording ideas in the car.
Pandora - music streaming.
Lux touch - risk clone.
Tap defense - resource management game.
Shazam - identifies music you hear.

Pay apps
Inet - $1.99 network scanner/port scanner.

If you jailbreak it
Cycorder - video recorder available from cydia.
:)
