What is the best 1AA Fenix light?
on: June 10, 2009, 01:38:52 AM
By "best" I mean the brightness to runtime ratio is pretty good...and pocketability (most AA lights are pretty small though I think).

Does it have to be Fenix?

Nitecore has some good 1AA offerings such as the amazing EZAA and D10

I don't have any AA Fenix lights but I have some of their CR123 and they are great lights so imagine that the LD10 is a great one as well. I do have a NiteCore Defender Infinity and it's a great little AA light. The reason I went for it over the Fenix offering is the ability to set the Low level to my choosing and for the forward clicky. I have had it for a while now it's been a very good light.

Personally, I'd chose the Nitecore over the Fenix as well.

Thanks for the input :tu:

It doesn't have to be Fenix at all, it was just the first company that came to mind that has low priced/well made lights.  A few companies that splintered off from them right?  Like Nitecore?  So anything is game in that realm...

There are alot of sterling "AA" choices available right now :) The Fenix L1D and LD10 is really bright, and has rock solid regulation. The Photon Pro is another runtime to output value. Let us know which you have chosen. :mail: :D

The LD10 is looking really nice to me...

I don't really like a ton of modes...any more than low, med, high is too much IMO.  Is the LD10 difficult to get through the modes?  I'll mainly be using the medium/low settings..

The L1D has two UI modes. General mode and turbo mode. These two are accessed by turning the bezel. In general mode, tailswitch operation moves from low (9 lumens) to med(40 lumens) to high (90 lumens) to SOS. In Turbo mode it cycles from Turbo(120 lumens) and Strobe only. I really like the light, but is it the MOST user friendly interface? In my very humble opinion....no. :)

Jetbeam made a very small AA torch called the JB MK 1 IBS. It would allow user selectable low(less than 2 lumens)medium and high. Wicked how bright this torch is with a 3.7V rechargeable. Probably close to 170 real world lumens out the front of the little thing. I really like how simple and practical the interface is on these lights. In typical JetBeam fashion it was only produced for a few months.

the nitecore D10 is worth a hard look. you can have your cake and eat it too. quirky... but not quarky. this is a must have light that can hold it's own with any light out there. the engineering and design allows very simple or very complex use. it is a torch that can go from day to night and all points between. i recommend a clip if chosen. it has never quite me or let me down and one of only 2 torches i would buy again.

I'd go for the LD10. Switching the modes isn't very difficult at all. I just got one in a trade recently and I LOVE it!

The D10 is excellent, but I don't like how long it takes to go from low to high-high to low; it takes 4 seconds!

LD10 right here as well!

Between the two companies (Nitecore and Fenix) I would have to say Fenix, because they have lots of accessories which can make a single torch do a various variety of tasks.

I would by the LD10 and maybe later when I need more runtime I would just buy the L2D/LD20 body as an add on. A diffuser (white) is strongly recommended by me when you buy a LD10/LD20 or PD series of light (you can pretty much ditch you lantern!). If you need a headlamp Fenix also supplies one. They also sell bike mounts!!!

I've never owned a Fenix but received LiteFlux LF5XT, an AA light yesterday.  I don't have a handle on its UI yet but it sure is bright.  Made in Taiwan.

Olights rock.  I'm very pleased with mine.  They also come in R2 varieties now that throw out a great number of lumens.  The half-and-half reflectors are also interesting.

L1D Q5 for me.

I've recently picked up the Nitecore D10 and EZAA.  Both are excellent lights that will find place in my EDC.  Once I got used to it I really like the UI of the D10, though it does have its flaws.  And the EZAA is simplicity itself and almost as easy to carry as an LD01(or similar).
